Wireless charging technology for electric cars helps RAV4 travel continuously for nearly 1,950 km in a test by Electreon.

According to Carscoops, Electreon has just announced a world record for the longest all-electric journey in a car without plugging in. It is known that this is an Israeli-based startup that is trying to build technology that allows electric vehicles to charge while on the go.

A Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has been driven on a closed test track with wireless charging technology. According to Electreon, the Toyota electric vehicle has been slightly upgraded to be compatible with the charging track.

As a result, the Toyota RAV4 PHEV ran continuously for 100 hours with a total pure electric operating distance of nearly 1,950 km.

Although the Toyota RAV4 PHEV still had to stop a few times during the process so that a total of 55 participating drivers could take turns, the car did not need to recharge at any charging stations other than the electricity received from the road using wireless charging technology.

Electreon said that in more than 100 hours of operation, the Toyota RAV4 PHEV used in the test collected a total of 241.69 kWh of electricity from the charging track.

By using a PHEV model with a modest 18 kWh battery pack, Electreon wants to emphasize the main advantage of electric charging is reducing the size of the battery in electric cars.

Through testing with the Toyota RAV4 PHEV, Electreon has demonstrated that vehicles with modest electric range are still capable of traveling long distances on highways with wireless charging technology.

According to the previous announcement from the Japanese automaker, the Toyota RAV4 PHEV has a maximum pure electric operating distance of only 75 km between full charges.

Carscoops reported that Electreon signed an agreement with Toyota and Denso in March. Accordingly, the three will work together to develop wireless charging technology on new vehicles, while adding accessories that allow older electrified vehicles to use electric charging technology.

“This collaboration will expand the reach of wireless charging technology. At the same time, wireless charging for electric vehicles has proven to be a cost-effective solution for charging and aims to reduce the overall carbon footprint of electric vehicles,” said Oren Ezer, CEO of Electreon.

In addition to Toyota and Denso, Electreon has also announced pilot projects in Sweden, France, and Belgium. In Germany alone, Electreon has a €3.2 million (about $3.4 million) deal to operate a fully electric public bus system in that European country.
