New durian variety appears, causing fever, more expensive than Musang King

(Dan Tri) - Surpassing Musang King or Black Thorn, Malaysia's new durian variety is creating a "fever" among durian lovers with a selling price in Vietnamese currency of up to 900,000 VND/kg.

In Malaysia, the Tupai King durian variety is attracting special attention from durian lovers at home and abroad thanks to its unique flavor, according to Malay Mail.

Mr. Eric Yeap, owner of a durian orchard system in Penang (Malaysia), said that Tupai King durian is priced up to 150 RM/kg (equivalent to nearly 900,000 VND/kg) due to limited production. This price is the highest among all durian varieties in Malaysia, even higher than the popular durian varieties Black Thorn and Musang King.

Mr. Eric Yeap said that the Tupai King durian has a greenish-brown shell and is shaped like an egg with a pointed tip. The durian flesh is orange-yellow, has a bitter-sweet taste mixed with moderate fat content and a characteristic aroma.

"Tupai King durian has been grown for about 5-6 years, but has only become widely known in the last 2 years. Not only attracting domestic consumers, this durian variety also attracts consumers from Singapore and China," he shared in a phone interview with The Vibes.

The owner of this durian garden said he owns 20 Tupai King trees and plans to expand the planting area due to increasing demand. Many customers from Singapore even come to the garden to buy directly.

He predicts that Tupai King will be planted more widely across the country in the next three to four years as more farmers begin to see the economic potential of the variety. However, Mr Yeap also said that this year's durian production could fall by up to 30% due to heavy rains causing the flowers to fall early, leading to the possibility of further price increases.

Malaysia is a country that owns many of the most delicious and unique durian varieties in the world such as Black Thorn, Musang King, D24 durian... Malaysia has exported frozen durian to China since 2011 and frozen whole durian since May 2019. In June 2024, Malaysia will also officially export fresh durian to China.
