According to data from the Vietnam Customs Department, the turnover fruit and vegetable export in the first quarter of 2025 reached 1,164 billion USD, down 9.2% compared to the first quarter of 2024 and down 22.7% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.
However, many other fruit and vegetable products are still showing positive growth signals, including grapefruit.
Fresh Vietnamese grapefruit is not only consumed domestically but also exported to many countries such as China, the US, Canada, the EU, Southeast Asia, New Zealand... Of which, green-skin grapefruit is exported the most, mainly from some provinces in priority areas implementing the trade development program in mountainous, remote and island areas such as Long An, Ben Tre , Soc Trang, Hau Giang.
Quarter I/2025, grapefruit export brought in more than 17.5 million USD, up 60.6% over the same period last year. With this result, grapefruit officially entered the top 10 fruit and nut products with the highest export turnover of Vietnam, increasing its market share from 0.85% to 1.5% in just 3 months.
To date, fresh Vietnamese grapefruit has been present in 12 countries and territories. At the end of 2022, fresh grapefruit - the 7th fruit of Vietnam, after mango, longan, lychee, dragon fruit, rambutan and star apple - will be allowed to be imported into the US after 5 years of negotiations.
Similarly, in December 2022, grapefruit will continue to open its doors to New Zealand through official channels, marking a breakthrough that will help export turnover grow strongly. By April 2024, South Korea will be the latest market to “grant visas” to Vietnamese grapefruit, further expanding the room and export potential.
The recent growth in grapefruit exports is not accidental, but reflects the effectiveness of the policy of opening the agricultural market and improving the quality of growing areas. The fact that the US, New Zealand and recently South Korea have accepted official imports of Vietnamese grapefruit shows that this fruit has met strict requirements on plant quarantine, traceability and food hygiene and safety.
In the US, Vietnamese grapefruit has an advantage thanks to the season supplementing domestic supply and being competitive in price. New Zealand is a small market but has high demand. South Korea, with a fruit import scale of more than 2 billion USD/year, opens up a large space if domestic enterprises exploit distribution channels well.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , the country currently has 105,400 hectares of grapefruit, with an output of nearly 905,000 tons; with diverse grapefruit varieties, typical for each region. The Mekong Delta alone accounts for about 32,000 hectares with an output of about 369,000 tons... This is also the region that grows the most green-skinned grapefruit.
Provinces with large grapefruit areas are Ben Tre (8,824ha), Vinh Long (8,619ha), Dong Nai (5,426ha) with famous grapefruit varieties such as green-skin grapefruit, Nam Roi grapefruit, Tan Trieu grapefruit...
