According to sources, airstrikes and anti-aircraft missile attacks have been taking place since the night of June 23 in two of the three cities of Omdurman and Khartoum in Sudan. In addition, in recent days, clashes between the two sides have also expanded to cities west of the capital, in the Darfur and Kordofan regions.

The ongoing fighting has made life even more difficult for the Sudanese people. Many families have been caught in the crossfire, fighting and shelling for months. They are sheltering in place and essential supplies have run out in the hot summer weather. Entire districts of Khartoum are without running water and those who remain in the city have been without electricity since June 22. What the Sudanese people need most now is a return to peace and stability.

Both sides of the conflict need to sit down and negotiate. The fighting and stalemate must end. Any war should end and should not continue like this.

Meanwhile, international relief efforts have stalled after more than two months of conflict. The United Nations said yesterday that 25 million people, more than half of Sudan's population, are in dire need of aid and protection. Aid has reached at least 2.8 million people, but safety concerns have prevented further deliveries.

The United Nations Security Council met yesterday on the situation in Sudan and called for an end to the conflict and protection of civilians.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the permanent representative of the United Arab Emirates, Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, stressed: "The member states of the Security Council call for respect for international humanitarian law and increased humanitarian assistance to Sudan. The fighting must stop and civilians must be protected."

According to statistics, the fighting that broke out in Sudan since mid-April has killed more than 2,000 people, forced 2.5 million people to leave their homes and sparked a major humanitarian crisis in the country./.
