Online consultation, overnight liver transplant

On the afternoon of June 23, 108 Military Central Hospital received information from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center at E Hospital about a brain-dead patient due to a traffic accident and the patient's family agreed to donate organs to save lives.

The patient suffered a severe traumatic brain injury due to a traffic accident on the afternoon of June 22, leading to a coma with no possibility of recovery. After the patient was diagnosed with brain death, the patient's family overcame the pain, with compassion, a noble act of sowing good seeds in the community, and agreed to donate organs so that the lives of other patients could continue.

After the donated liver was coordinated to the 108 Military Central Hospital, due to prior preparation for patients with transplant indications, the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Department quickly determined that the transplant recipient was a male soldier working at the 12th Army Corps, the patient had multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma on the background of cirrhosis due to hepatitis B and was indicated for a liver transplant.

Due to the unusual developments in the transplant resuscitation process, it is very difficult to maintain the stable condition of the transplanted organ until the morning of June 24. Therefore, the work related to organ retrieval and transplantation needs to be carried out earlier than expected.

There was no more time for a centralized consultation, so on the evening of June 23, Director of 108 Military Central Hospital Le Huu Song decided to convene the liver transplant subcommittee to consult on the transplant case online.

The liver removal team returned to 108 Central Military Hospital at 2:00 a.m.

With the criteria of ensuring the safest transplant and the highest recovery ability, the liver extraction team of the 108 Military Central Hospital led by Associate Professor, Doctor Le Van Thanh - Acting Director of the Institute of Digestive Surgery and Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery quickly went to E Hospital to perform liver extraction surgery and brought it back to the hospital at 2:00 a.m. on June 24 for transplantation to the patient. In which, the left lobe of the donor's liver was coordinated for the pediatric patient at Vinmec Hospital.

The liver transplant team worked through the night to perform the transplant. After 4 hours of surgery, the transplant was completed, the patient was fully awake and was transferred to the Department of Surgical Resuscitation and Organ Transplantation for further monitoring and treatment.

Detailed planning for liver transplant surgery

To perform each transplant, every step of preparation must be carried out meticulously and carefully. Not only proactively assessing the condition of the patient receiving the organ, but also making detailed plans, including preventing any possible risks, to ensure the most favorable transplant, as well as the best health of the patient after the transplant.

Master, Doctor Vu Ngoc Tuan, Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital confided: "Each step of preparation is a race against time, we are always aware that any mistake will be a mistake to the donor, so everyone works with the highest concentration".

In each transplant case, the story begins with the decisive direction of the Hospital Board of Directors and the urgent involvement of the implementation team with the motto: Make every effort to save the patient's life.

Upon receiving information about the donated liver organ that was compatible with his body, the transplant patient could not hide his emotion at the noble and humane act of the donor's family and each member of the liver transplant team at 108 Central Military Hospital.

The success of each transplant will light up hope for patients waiting for a transplant. It is also a gratitude to the families who have made the noble gesture of donating organs of their loved ones who unfortunately suffered brain death, helping them feel that their loved ones are still living a peaceful life.

Major General, Professor, Doctor Le Huu Song, Director of 108 Central Military Hospital shared: “Organ transplantation is a professional matter, but organ donation is a humane act, a story of conscience contributing to building a humane and compassionate society. Brain-dead organ donors, to us, not only leave this life but also leave behind a part of their body to continue living, to continue contributing in another person's body. We would like to express our gratitude for this noble act of the donor and his family."
