Yangwang U8L - BYD's large-sized electric SUV with gasoline engine (EREV) - has started pre-sale in the Chinese market with an estimated price of 1.3 million yuan (about 181,130 USD or 4.55 billion VND). This SUV is considered a rival of Rolls-Royce Cullinan in the billion-people market. Yangwang is BYD's luxury car brand, operating in China since January 2023. The starting SUV is the U8 with a starting price of 1.089 million yuan (about 3.81 billion VND). The U8L is a larger version of the original Yangwang U8. The full name of the new SUV is Yangwang U8L Dingshi Edition.
The car has a similar design to the standard U8, including a prominent front end, large grille and integrated headlights. However, the U8L is 372 mm longer while the wheelbase is 200 mm longer than the standard version. The rear of the car uses a split tailgate instead of opening horizontally like the standard version, reminiscent of luxury SUVs such as the Range Rover and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Another highlight of the Yangwang U8L Dingshi Edition is the 24K gold-plated front logo instead of the glass one like the standard version. The car comes in two paint colors, black and gold, and uses large rims with a diameter of up to 23 inches. The length x width x height of this model are 5,400 x 2,049 x 1,921 mm respectively and the wheelbase is 3,250 mm. Thus, the car has a size equivalent to large American SUVs such as the Cadillac Escalade. With its large size, the Yangwang U8L has a 3-row interior with a 2+2+2 layout. The seats in the first two rows have heating, ventilation and 14-point massage functions while the armrests are also heated. The car's center console includes 3 screens: a 23.6-inch digital dashboard for the driver...
The car is equipped with a 12.8-inch vertical center touchscreen and a 23.6-inch screen for the front passengers. In addition, the car is equipped with automatic dimming windows in the second row and large ceiling-mounted screens for the rear seats. The Yangwang U8L uses the DiPilot 600 driving assistance system with 3 LiDAR sensors, with a computing capacity of up to 600 TOPS. This system supports automatic navigation (Navigate On Autopilot - NOA) on both city and highway roads, along with automatic parking function. The suspension system is Disus-P hydraulic type, accompanied by high-end carbon ceramic brakes. The Yangwang U8L is equipped with a range-extending powertrain with a 2.0L turbocharged gasoline engine and four separate electric motors for each wheel, generating a total output of 880 kW (1,180 hp) and a maximum torque of 1,280 Nm. Thanks to that, the car is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and achieving a mixed driving range of up to 1,000 km.
Chinese customers can now deposit 20,000 yuan (about 70 million VND) to buy the Yangwang U8L. Customers who already own a Yangwang will enjoy a car exchange incentive of up to 80,000 yuan (280 million VND) after the car is officially launched. The Yangwang U8L is priced about 17% higher than the regular U8. With this model, Yangwang does not consider domestic products as direct competitors but targets high-end SUVs from long-standing brands. Currently, Yangwang's product line has 3 models with the U7 being the newest product. Despite being part of the BYD group, Yangwang's sales in China are quite low. In the first half of 2025, the company delivered only 1,003 vehicles domestically, down 5.5 times compared to the same period in 2024. BYD hopes to boost sales of this luxury car brand by expanding into international markets and diversifying its products.
