Specifically, 9 flights arriving at Noi Bai had to divert to alternate airports and 3 flights taking off from Noi Bai had to temporarily stop waiting for weather conditions to ensure safety for departure.
As of now, the weather has improved and flights are operating normally.
Noi Bai International Airport recommends that passengers and relatives on affected flights pay attention to information from the airline and coordinate with functional forces to ensure safe flights, security and order in the terminal area.
A representative of the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) said that the Noi Bai Aviation Meteorological Center had to strengthen a series of high-tech solutions to upgrade its "defense system" against extreme weather phenomena.
High-resolution weather forecast models combine data from weather radar and satellites to accurately calculate the location, intensity, and duration of thunderstorms.
Modern technology is combined with traditional experience to build early warning bulletins 1-3 hours in advance, helping flight operators promptly adjust flight plans through the CDM coordination mechanism.
At the same time, the automatic observation system (AWOS), Doppler radar (a special type of radar, in addition to determining the location of clouds and rain, it also measures the speed of movement of raindrops and clouds in the air) continuously updates information on the development of thunderstorms, wind speed, and lightning.
The Meteorological Center also closely coordinates with flight operations and airlines to develop flexible response plans to avoid airspace congestion or long waiting times.
When the weather risk is detected that affects the airport's reception capacity, the Air Traffic Control Center (VATM) immediately activates the flight control process. Instead of letting the aircraft take off and have to circle in the air, the system will calculate and allocate "Calculated Take-off Time" (CTOT) = recalculated take-off time.
Flights will depart at safer times, helping to minimize the risk of airspace congestion, save costs for airlines and ensure absolute safety for passengers.
