It is expected that on July 10, Ho Chi Minh City will announce the benchmark scores for grade 10. This is also the time when many families prepare for different learning paths for their children besides public high schools.
Happy on the right path
Nguyen Thu Hang is currently a 2nd year student in the 9+ program at Saigontourist College of Tourism and Hospitality ( Saigontourist School). In 2022, Hang failed to get into the public high school she wanted. Faced with the crossroads after grade 9, Hang was advised by her family to study at a vocational school with a program that allows her to both learn a trade and study culture. The whole family sat down and agreed to let Hang go to a vocational school.
For the past year, Hang has studied two morning and afternoon sessions a week. In the morning, Hang studies cultural subjects, and in the afternoon, she studies vocational subjects. Hang chose the profession of Beverage Technology, specializing in bartenders because she loves mixing delicious drinks. This summer, her cultural studies are on hold until the beginning of the new school year. Hang takes advantage of her free time to attend more classes to improve her bartending skills.

Hang shared that in the program, the practical part accounts for 70%. At first, Hang was not used to it, holding the mixing tools was already shaky, not to mention more advanced skills like bottle dancing (flairs). After each class, Hang stayed longer than her friends to practice more. "One day, I recorded a clip of the artistic bottle dancing for my mother to watch, she loved it. Seeing that I love the profession I chose, everyone in the family was happy," Hang said.
Meanwhile, Mai Ngoc Huu Phuoc - a student majoring in hotel management and business at Saigontourist School. In 2022, although he had enough points to enter a public school, Phuoc and his family thought of a faster way to study, the 9+ program. Phuoc thought that after 3 years, he would have both a secondary school diploma and be able to take the high school graduation exam to get a diploma. After that, he would be able to choose to continue studying at college, university or go to work.
Phuoc said that his father and uncle are holding several positions in the hotel, so he has liked the profession since he was young. Therefore, when he entered vocational school, he was like "a fish in water". In addition to studying tourism theory, he learned many practical skills in each hotel department as well as participated in many movements and competitions at school. "I feel that learning a profession is very interesting, instead of just studying cultural subjects. Moreover, cultural subjects at vocational school do not have much pressure, and I do not have to go to extra classes every night", Phuoc commented.

Many vocational training opportunities after grade 9 at Saigontourist
In recent years, Saigontourist School has been promoting enrollment in the 9+ system. Students who have graduated from junior high school are eligible to study. Here, students will study culture according to the regular education program in the mornings. In the afternoon, students will learn a trade.
The vocational system at Saigontourist School is very diverse. Grade 9 students can choose from the following majors: Tour Guide, Travel Management, Tourism Marketing, Hotel Management and Business, Restaurant and Catering Management and Business, Culinary Techniques, Baking Techniques, Beverage Techniques, Business Accounting, Information Technology, etc. Teachers from Saigontourist School will guide them in choosing and pursuing a career that suits their personal interests and strengths.
After 3 years, students of the 9+ program at Saigontourist School will have both a secondary school diploma and be able to take the high school graduation exam. It is estimated that the graduation rate of 9+ students has always been above 95% in recent years. With a high school diploma, students can apply directly to university right at the school. If not, students can still transfer to college.
Ms. Vo Thi My Van - Principal of Saigontourist College of Tourism and Hospitality - said that in addition to optimizing time, students also receive tuition incentives. According to Decree 81 of the Government, students are subsidized by the State for vocational training tuition. As for tuition for cultural subjects, students only have to pay almost the same amount as in public schools.
Ms. Vo Thi My Van added that at the age of 15, most students have psychological and physiological changes. Therefore, they always receive more attention from the school than students who enroll after completing grade 12. In each 9+ class at Saigontourist School, in addition to the homeroom teacher, there will be additional teachers who closely monitor the students' studies, psychology and career guidance. This approach will help students stay on track to achieve a high school diploma and soon mature in their careers.

Belonging to Saigontourist Group with relationships with most travel agencies, tourism companies, restaurants, and hotels in Ho Chi Minh City, Saigontourist School always opens career doors for students studying in all study programs. Especially with the 9+ system, which is exposed to the profession early, young people can proactively participate in the labor market. In addition, students can also continue their studies at colleges and universities right at Saigontourist School when they have a high school diploma. "There will be no best path, but only the most suitable path for each person," said Ms. Van.
