Ms. Thi Oanh's family's 3-hectare coffee plantation yields over 3.5 tons per hectare.
Rising from hardship
In 2000, after getting married and moving out on their own, Ms. Thi Oanh and her husband began their new life. Their only asset at the time was over 3 hectares of old coffee plantations, whose economic efficiency was declining due to weakened plants, outdated varieties, and unstable yields. For many years, the family barely had enough to eat, with no surplus, leaving them constantly struggling to make ends meet.
However, with a progressive spirit and determination to improve, Ms. Oanh did not allow herself to be complacent with the status quo. She actively participated in agricultural technical training courses organized by the local authorities; actively sought information through media channels and from the experiences of successful farmers in the region.
In 2015, after careful consideration, she decided to remove all the old coffee plants and switch to planting the new TR4 variety – a variety considered to have high yield, good quality, and suitability to the local climate and soil conditions. Simultaneously, she boldly invested in planting an additional 1,000 pepper vines intercropped among the coffee rows, along with some fruit trees such as durian, avocado, and Thai jackfruit. With a thirst for knowledge and perseverance in overcoming difficulties, she and her husband gradually accumulated more experience and successfully applied scientific and sustainable farming methods.
In just over three years, her family's TR4 coffee plantation began yielding a stable harvest with high productivity. The pepper plants thrived, producing uniform fruit. The fruit trees also grew healthily, gradually generating income for the family. Currently, Ms. Thi Oanh's family earns over 1 billion VND annually from crops such as coffee, pepper, and fruit trees. Not only has she achieved economic stability, but she has also actively invested in replanting, soil care, and expanding her model towards organic farming, biosafety, and long-term environmental protection.
Not only is Ms. Thi Oanh a skilled farmer, but she is also an active participant in social work. She regularly engages in community activities in Bu N'Doh village, from rural development movements to environmental protection programs and preserving the traditional cultural identity of the M'nong ethnic group. With her friendly and compassionate nature, she is loved and trusted by the villagers.
Exemplary women from ethnic minorities excelling in business.
Ms. Oanh is a living example of the spirit of overcoming difficulties, daring to think and act, of women in ethnic minority communities. Her success is not only the result of hard work but also the result of innovative thinking, listening to and grasping trends in efficient and sustainable production. Currently, Ms. Oanh is continuing to improve her orchards, expanding the area for growing durian and avocado in a clean and safe manner, linked to market demand. She also hopes to participate in advanced training courses to improve her techniques and aim for more efficient specialized production.
With her tireless efforts, Ms. Thi Oanh deserves to be a role model in developing household economies in ethnic minority areas, and an inspiration for many other M'nong women to be more confident in their journey to take control of their lives.
