Noi Bai International Airport has begun implementing a smart airport model at Terminal T2, allowing international passengers to experience an automated check-in process for the first time, replacing many manual checks and shortening waiting times.
At the terminal entrances, passengers can look up flight information via a multi-functional touchscreen display system, and easily locate check-in counters, terminal maps, restaurants, and other amenities with just a few simple steps.
In the check-in area, instead of queuing at traditional counters, passengers can self-check-in at 24 automated check-in kiosks to select seats and print boarding passes. The automated baggage drop-off system allows passengers to weigh, print, and attach baggage tags themselves, giving them more control over their time and eliminating reliance on staff.
For Vietnamese passengers with chip-embedded passports, the airport has installed passport readers combined with a facial biometric recognition system, which connects passenger information to the database, thereby making the check-in process faster and more accurate.

Upon entering the security area, the automated gate system, utilizing biometric facial recognition, will match data and open the gate within 1-3 seconds, replacing the previous manual screening process which took approximately 1-2 minutes. If biometrics is not available, passengers can scan the barcode on their boarding pass to open the gate automatically.
Afterward, passengers proceed through the automated immigration control system and undergo a second facial verification before entering the security screening area.
At the security screening area, the terminal is equipped with a multi-dimensional CT scanner system that analyzes baggage images, allowing security personnel to thoroughly inspect without missing any dangerous items. The metal detectors, combined with body scanners, accurately detect both metallic and non-metallic objects; the images are displayed as "neutral avatars," ensuring passenger privacy.

According to representatives of Noi Bai International Airport, the pilot application of facial recognition biometrics marks a new step in comprehensive digital transformation, helping to minimize waiting times and enhance passenger experience. Alongside the automated processes, the airport will maintain traditional check-in and security counters to ensure flexible service.
Along with the adoption of new technology, since December, the T2 international passenger terminal has completed its floor expansion, adding more check-in counters and screening areas, increasing its operating capacity from 10 to 15 million passengers per year.
The expansion project, covering an area of approximately 412,000 m2, includes expanding the two wings of the terminal and the central area, and adding a system of jet bridges. The check-in island has been expanded, increasing the number of check-in counters from 24 to 120; the number of baggage claim conveyors from 2 to 8; the number of jet bridges from 15 to 29, and adding a system for storing early arrival and transit baggage.
