Many people hospitalized after eating poisonous wild mushrooms

Since the beginning of the rainy season, Lam Dong General Hospital has received 13 cases of mushroom poisoning, including 8 people from 2 families and 1 tour guide. The risk of poisoning from wild mushrooms is increasing, causing many people to worry.

At the hospital's Infectious Diseases Department, Mr. LVM (residing in Duc Trong District, Lam Dong ) is still being treated after being poisoned by eating wild mushrooms. Mr. M. said that a few days ago, he went to the pine forest near his house to collect some mushrooms and brought them home to cook. After eating, Mr. M. experienced symptoms of nausea, dizziness, and frequent diarrhea, so his family took him to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Not only locals, many tourist groups also choose to experience mushroom picking as part of their journey to explore the nature of Da Lat. However, not everyone is equipped with enough knowledge to distinguish between "heaven's gift" and "death". Some people eat mushrooms raw after picking them, while others bring them home to cook.

Expert advice

It is known that after the first rains of the season, under the pine forests in Da Lat City, many types of mushrooms with different colors and shapes often appear. Among them, there are types such as chicken egg mushrooms, rice straw mushrooms, beef liver mushrooms, coral mushrooms... that can be used as food. Therefore, people go into the forest to pick mushrooms to eat, some people pick whole baskets to sell to earn extra income.

Dr. Truong Binh Nguyen, a mycologist at the Faculty of Biology, Da Lat University, said: "Under the pine forest canopy in Da Lat, there are about 300 species of symbiotic fungi, including edible and toxic mushrooms, many of which have similar shapes."

Worryingly, the area is also home to more than 50 species of the Amanita genus, which are known as “death mushrooms” because they contain extremely strong toxins. Some Amanita species resemble the chicken egg or peacock egg mushrooms, which are commonly harvested for food.

In addition, in the pine forest of Da Lat, there are poisonous mushrooms that look similar to termite mushrooms - a type of mushroom that is often favored by local people. From the stem, color to the mushroom cap, it is easy to confuse. However, if you dig carefully down to the base, you can distinguish: real termite mushrooms have long stems, while poisonous mushrooms often have no stems or short stems. In addition, many types of wild mushrooms have attractive aromas and colors, considered "heaven's gifts", and are often picked by local people and tourists to cook, posing many potential risks if they are not knowledgeable.
