From May 25, the international train between Vietnam and China will resume operation after 5 years. Accordingly, Vietnamese passengers can travel from Vietnam (the first station is in Hanoi ) to mainland China by train, the farthest destination is the capital Beijing. Some notes below will help Vietnamese passengers choose the right itinerary.
Train schedule
Hanoi - Nanning route runs daily
The train will depart from Gia Lam Station (Hanoi, Vietnam) at 21:20 and arrive at Nanning Station (Guangxi, China) at 10:06 the next day. The train stops along the route: Bac Giang - Dong Dang - Bang Tuong - Sung Ta. In the opposite direction, the train departs from Nanning Station at 18:05 and arrives at Gia Lam Station at 5:30 the next day.
Hanoi - Beijing route runs every Tuesday and Friday
Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) operates an additional train to Beijing on the Nanning route every Tuesday and Friday. Upon arrival at Nanning station, passengers will transfer to a train from Nanning to Beijing.
The train departs from Jialin Station at 9:20 p.m. and arrives at Beijing West Station (Beijing) at 10 a.m. on Thursdays and Sundays. The train stops along the way after Nanning include Guilin North - Hengyang - Changsha - Zhengzhou.
In addition, from Nanning station, passengers can also buy tickets to continue to a third country by rail at international transit stations in China.
Ticket prices and how to buy tickets
According to VNR, to buy a train ticket, passengers need to present their passport.
Currently, VNR sells intermodal train tickets directly at Hanoi, Gia Lam, Bac Giang and Dong Dang stations, not online.
Tickets for the Hanoi - Nanning route cost about 1 million VND, and for the Hanoi - Beijing route, nearly 9.4 million VND. Children under 4 years old are free, and those from 4 to 12 years old get a 50% discount (each adult is allowed to bring one child). Groups of 6 or more people get a 25% discount.
Immigration procedures
Passengers traveling by international train must have a passport and a visa or equivalent documents. The travel document is currently only applicable to visitors entering and exiting the country at Bang Tuong border gate, but is only valid for the day (departing in the morning - returning in the evening). If staying, visitors must apply for a group visa (traveling on a tour) or a single visa if traveling individually.
Passengers will complete immigration procedures at Dong Dang station, Lang Son province (Vietnam) and Bang Tuong, Guangxi province (China).
Some other notes
Previously, when the Vietnam - China road tourism routes were first opened, many travel companies in the North organized tours by intermodal train. However, in recent years, when the road routes have been well invested and the vehicle speeds have increased, tours have mainly used cars as the means of transport.
For now, no tourism agency in the North has plans to resume tours by intermodal rail.
Currently, passengers traveling to Nanning by road, departing from Hanoi, mainly use high-quality buses (with bus transfers at the border gate). Ticket prices start at 650,000 VND, travel time is about 7 hours. Each day, there are an average of 5 trips, departing from 6am to 12pm.
In the coming time, Vietnam Railway Corporation and China Railway Corporation will continue to monitor passenger demand to adjust the frequency of intermodal trains between the two countries accordingly.
