According to information from Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, during the April 30-May 1 holidays, the unit successfully performed 6 organ transplants from donated organs of a brain-dead person.

Immediately, despite the long holiday of the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the South and national reunification (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1), the hospital leaders quickly mobilized enough staff to carry out legal procedures in parallel with evaluating the function of donated organs, selecting suitable patients from the transplant waiting list and notifying the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center.

On May 2, after assessing the brain death of the patient according to the regulations of the Ministry of Health , doctors at Cho Ray Hospital performed surgery to remove and transplant organs for the patients. A total of 6 organs were successfully removed and transplanted, including: liver, kidney, cornea and skin, for 6 patients. By 8:00 p.m. on May 3, the last transplant was completed, with initial results for all transplants.

“When I saw the first streams of urine flowing out, I felt my life had been revived,” shared Mr. NN T (48 years old, living in Dong Nai province) after a successful kidney transplant.

Previously, in 2021, after days of continuous fatigue and blurred vision, he went to the doctor and was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. By 2023, he had to start regular dialysis and registered on the waiting list for a kidney transplant from a brain-dead donor at Cho Ray Hospital in the hope of ending his days of living dependent on a dialysis machine. Then, when he suddenly received a phone call from a doctor at Cho Ray Hospital about a brain-dead organ donor, he was so happy that he called his wife and together they caught an early bus to Ho Chi Minh City.

After completing the pre-operative tests, he entered the operating room that evening. When he woke up the next morning, he saw the first drops of urine from the catheter and felt a real revival begin. “I couldn’t believe this miracle had happened to me. Thank you to the donor, the donor’s family, and the medical team for giving me life again,” Mr. T. said, his eyes filled with emotion.

The joy was similar for Ms. HT K (51 years old, living in Hau Giang province) when she received a "miraculous gift" during the April 30 holiday: "The moment I received the phone call from Cho Ray doctors informing me that I had received a kidney transplant from a brain-dead donor, I was happier than if I had won the lottery."

Immediately, she and her husband packed their bags and went to Ho Chi Minh City to complete the admission procedures and prepare for the surgery. The surgery began at 9:40 p.m. the same day and ended around 1 a.m. the next morning. Waking up at 4:30 a.m. on May 3, she felt as if her body had a new companion - the transplanted kidney had started to function.

The patient who received the skin graft was a 62-year-old woman (living in Binh Dinh province) who suffered 48% second and third degree burns (38% third degree) all over her body and had a history of diabetes. On March 8, the patient was admitted to Cho Ray Hospital and underwent necrosis surgery and skin grafting 7 times, but the area of skin loss was still extensive. After the skin graft received from a brain-dead donor on May 3, the female patient's skin loss area was completely covered. Currently, the patient's health is stable.

The two patients who received corneas were a 21-year-old girl (living in Kien Giang province) and a 46-year-old woman (living in Ho Chi Minh City), both suffering from corneal dystrophy in both eyes. After the cornea transplant, their health is progressing well. The patient who received the liver transplant was a 62-year-old man (living in Soc Trang province), who had been treated for severe cirrhosis since 2023, but his condition has been getting worse. The liver transplant surgery on May 3 was the last resort to save the patient's life./.
