Water is the best beverage for passengers on the plane, but if you can't cut back on other drinks, choose from these six options.

When flying, especially on long flights, it's important to remember that your body must adapt well to altitudes that can reach 10,000 meters or more. Cesar Sauza, a nutritionist at Health Canal, told Travel + Leisure : "Our bodies can lose about 250 ml of water per hour. If you don't replenish your water properly for a long time, it can cause severe dehydration, especially on flights longer than 6 hours. When flying, you should avoid all sugary, caffeinated or alcoholic drinks to limit dehydration. Water should be the choice to ensure your body's health."

But if you can't cut out the above drinks, try the ones Sauza suggests below.

Club Soda

If you're really craving something fizzy, grab a club soda instead of a traditional soda, says Sauza. "Most sodas have more than 30 grams of sugar per can. If you drink one or more on a flight, you could end up feeling tired and dehydrated."

This is also agreed by representatives of the University of Chicago Medicine. Club soda is better than regular soda. However, the most obvious point is to skip any carbonated drinks containing artificial sweeteners as well as those with added salt.

You can have a little wine, but make sure it's low-alcohol. "Red wine tends to have a higher alcohol content and more additives, both of which can dehydrate you on the flight. So white wine is a better choice. And of course, remember to limit your alcohol intake when flying."

Skip the cocktails

If you're flying somewhere special, it's also a good idea to order something celebratory, like a cocktail. But Sauza says it's best to skip the mixed drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic). "Skipping alcohol on the flight is the best way to keep yourself entertained. But if you're going to drink, your best bet is clear wine with ice or club soda."

Mixed drinks can raise your blood alcohol level faster if they contain artificial sweeteners. According to a 2006 study, people who drank cocktails containing diet soda with artificial sweeteners had blood alcohol levels of 0.05% compared to 0.03% for those who drank other drinks.

Skip the beer

"Beer is also high in calories and carbohydrates, both of which contribute to jet lag and dehydration," says Sauza. So what can you drink instead? Just like red wine, white wine can be a good substitute for beer.

"White wine is always a better choice than beer, especially on flights. If you've ever wondered about the alcohol content of white and red wine, or other beers and liquors, follow this advice on your next flight."

Try not to use caffeine

Many people can't live without caffeine, but Sauza recommends avoiding it, especially on any flights that involve a change in time zones, as it can disrupt your sleep and contribute to jet lag. If you want something hot, Sauza recommends ordering a decaffeinated tea that also has no sugar.

Juice may seem like a healthy option, but as mentioned above, all juices served on planes are bottled. “Even if they’re 100% natural, one glass can contain as much sugar as a can of soda. Instead, bring fresh fruit. They’ll also help hydrate you, as fruit is high in water.”
