6 films screened at the 14th Francophone Film Festival

The 14th Francophone Film Festival in Vietnam, taking place from March 22-27, is part of a series of events to celebrate International Francophonie Day on March 20.

This year's film festival has the theme "Diversity and vitality of the Francophone community present everywhere in the world ". The event is organized by the Wallonie-Bruxelles Delegation in Vietnam, the Asia-Pacific Regional Office of the International Organization of La Francophonie and the Embassies of France, Canada and Switzerland.

Cinema lovers in Vietnam will have the opportunity to travel to Europe, Asia, North America and discover the richness, cultural diversity and language of the Francophone space.

Six films will be introduced to Vietnamese audiences on this occasion: "The Funny Conmen", "Viking", "Business Trip to the Land of Ch'tis", "Glorious Ashes", "Road to Glory" and "The White House".

The films in this festival are not only from France and French-speaking countries, but also from producers in Southeast Asia, with the participation of the film “The White House” produced by Cambodia.

In which "The Funny Fool" (La fiancée du poète) is a comedy drama about Mireille, a person who loves painting and poetry.

Mireille was content with her job as a waitress at the cafeteria of the Charleville College of Fine Arts. She occasionally stole small items and smuggled cigarettes to students. Unable to maintain the large family home on the banks of the Meuse that she had inherited, Mireille decided to rent rooms to three people.

Three men will disrupt her daily life and inadvertently prepare the way for the return of the fourth, the poet, the great love of her youth... The film won the Valois Prize for Best Screenplay at the 2023 Angoulème Francophone Film Festival.

The Vikings are a group of volunteers who are looking to emulate the personalities of the first astronauts to land on Mars. The goal is to create a “B Crew” on the ground to simulate the astronauts on Mars and help them figure out how to solve the problems they face.

The film revolves around the main character David - a high school gym teacher who seizes this opportunity to fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut and making a difference. The film is a story about the gap between dreams and reality. Therefore, the film will have some absurd details, mixing the style of a comedy and a fable.

The film “A Trip to the Land of Ch'tis” (Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis) revolves around the character Philippe Abrams, the director of the Salon-de-Provence Post Office in Bouches-du-Rhône.

To please his depressed wife Julie, he decided to use his connections and tricks to fool the inspectors and get transferred to Côte d'Azur. Unfortunately, he was discovered and was punished by being transferred to Bergues in the North. He had to leave his family to go to a place he was full of prejudice.

But contrary to his thoughts, he meets friendly and warm people here, like the postman Antoine. When he returns home and tries to convince his wife of the good things of the new land, she does not believe him. So Philippe decides to lie to please his wife...

The movie "Road to Glory" (La voie royale) is a story about a female student named Sophie - a high school student with excellent academic performance.

Encouraged by her math teacher, Sophie took a break from her work on the family farm to take a preparatory science class.

Here, meeting friends of the same age, successes and failures, and facing an extremely fierce exam helped Sophie understand that the dream of passing the entrance exam to the prestigious Polytechnic University is not simply a competition, but it is truly a challenge to rise in society.

“Glorious Ashes” (Cendres glorieuses) by Vietnamese director Bui Thac Chuyen is a story about three women, dealing with how they love and how they keep their men.

The film won the Golden Balloon Award at the 2022 Three Continents Film Festival; the Golden Kite Award 2023; and the Golden Lotus at the 2023 Vietnam Film Festival.

The movie "White Building" is about Samnang, 20 years old, living in a historic building in the capital Phnom Penh.

A series of unfortunate events happened to Samnang: his best friend left his hometown; his father got sick; and the building where his family lived was about to be demolished. Samnang had to face these events, which made him grow up…

The film won many awards: Best Actor at the 2021 Venice Film Festival; Best Cinematography at the 2021 Lisbon & Estorli Film Festival.

The films will be screened at 7:30 p.m. from March 22 to 27, 2024. In Hanoi, the films will be screened at the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio (465 Hoang Hoa Tham, Ba Dinh District) from. In Ho Chi Minh City, the films in the festival will be screened at DCine Ben Thanh (6 Mac Dinh Chi, District 1).

Film screenings are open to the public.
