7 outdated small bedroom arrangement rules to ditch

Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí09/04/2023

For example, some people like to hang half-worn clothes on hooks above the door. But to some people, that looks messy.

So what are the outdated rules for organizing a small bedroom that we should change? Here are the answers from the experts - professional organizers and cleaners.

The bigger the cabinet the better.

Interior designer Kate Diaz of Swanky Den recommends looking for new storage ideas for small bedrooms. Swap out large dressers and bulky chests of drawers. “Avoid storage solutions that take up floor space, like bulky chests of drawers, and install shelving or wall cabinets to increase storage capacity,” she says.

According to this expert, you should use multifunctional furniture such as sofas with hidden storage compartments which can be effective in maximizing the use of space.

Additionally, incorporating vertical storage solutions like hanging racks and floating shelves can keep floor space clear while providing additional places to store items.

"The more open the floor plan, the more spacious the room feels," says Kate.

Use thin hangers to save space

Slim hangers aren't as useful as they once were, says organizing expert Christina Hidek of Streamlined Living. Slim hangers allow you to fit more items in your closet, but Christina argues that this is because the hangers cram clothes into the space.

“Instead of using flimsy hangers, downsize your wardrobe so that it holds the items you'll actually wear and everything fits comfortably in the closet with some room left over,” she suggests.

Do not leave any items under the bed.

There are some items that feng shui experts advise against storing under the bed, such as exercise equipment and shoes, because they block the flow of "chi", clutter the space, or are unhygienic. These things affect your sleep quality.

However, many home organization experts, including The Chaos Liberator founder Dawn Falcone, say this is unrealistic.

“Not storing things under the bed is an outdated organizational idea. Anyone who understands feng shui will often advise never storing anything under the bed, but in small bedrooms, under-bed storage is necessary,” says Dawn.

“Instead of clear bins, I like to buy beds with built-in drawers or under-bed storage drawers or wheeled storage containers for easy access,” the expert adds.

Reuse old shoe boxes for storage

"I think an outdated idea of organization is keeping every shoe box you buy and stacking them in a closet or even on the bedroom floor," says Louie Lavec.

This keeps shoes clean but takes up valuable space in a small bedroom, explains the lead interior designer at All Barndominium Plans.

According to experts, instead of storing shoes in boxes, you should invest in shoe organizers that can be hung on doors or attached to walls.

“This makes it easier to store shoes without taking up too much space, and it also helps you limit clutter,” adds Louie.

Hide objects from sight

A clean, tidy bedroom can help the homeowner sleep better. Therefore, we often tend to want to hide our belongings in closets and drawers.

However, mattresses and pillows will make more of a difference to your sleep than such a completely monotonous aesthetic.

Hiding things out of sight to make a space look tidier is outdated (Photo: Future PLC).

"Don't hide your stuff," says Kate Diaz. "If possible, find creative ways to display items on shelves or decorate them on dressers and nightstands instead of hiding them in drawers or baskets."

Organizing expert Vicky Silverthorn agrees: "I think hiding things you use every day doesn't help organize your space, but it does make things go unnoticed."

Do not store anything on top of the cabinet.

“Ideally you’ll have enough space in your wardrobe to store everything, but if you don’t then storing things on top of your wardrobe is perfectly acceptable,” says Lucy Searle, Editor-in-Chief, Homes & Gardens.

Experts note that if you store things on top of cabinets, you should use boxes with lids and attractive chests, instead of ugly cardboard boxes. You need to make sure the boxes have lids to avoid dust from getting on the items inside.

“I love boxes with clear lids. They also work great under the bed, a coordinated look that works great in a small bedroom,” says Lucy.

Make sure the room always looks perfect

It's easy to find home decorating tips online, but it's important to consider what works for your room and your lifestyle.

“In reality, most of that imagery is staged,” says arranger Bonnie Borromeo Tomlinson.

She makes the often forgotten point that organization means creating a space that is efficient and easy to work in.
