Determined to start a business on his homeland, Mr. Dau Quoc Phu (born in 1994, Xuan Vien commune, Nghi Xuan, Ha Tinh ) boldly invested in a farm to raise more than 100 wild boars.
After many years of working as a mechanic, barely making enough to support himself, Mr. Dau Quoc Phu (Cat Thuy village, Xuan Vien commune, Nghi Xuan) decided to return to his hometown to start a business raising livestock.
In 2021, he boldly rented 2.5 hectares of land from the commune to reclaim and start a business, investing in raising goats and wild pigs. “ The hilly land is located right next to the wild and rugged Vuc Rao, so I had to spend more than 150 million VND to renovate it. It took me more than a month of sweat and effort to complete the livestock area,” said Mr. Phu.
With the advantage of being located at the foot of Hong Linh mountain, he initially experimented with raising dozens of goats and 15 wild boars. After more than a year of studying and improving care and disease prevention techniques, his herds of goats and wild boars developed well, bringing quite high economic efficiency.
Mr. Phu said: " After selling one batch to raise another, my farm always maintains 35 goats and 5 wild boar sows, each year producing 2 batches, each batch from 40 - 50 pigs. In total, the profit from the herd of commercial goats and wild boars is about 150 - 200 million VND/year."
Realizing that raising wild boars is easy to care for, has high economic value, and has a more stable output than raising goats, in early 2023, Mr. Phu decided to borrow nearly 700 million VND to continue investing in raising wild boars on a large scale.
This land is far from residential areas, has many shade trees suitable for the habits of wild boars.
After nearly 2 months, the farm with an area of over 500 m2 , divided into 2 rows of houses with 20 barns, was completed. This time, he raised 18 sows and 40 piglets purchased from facilities with guaranteed breeding quality in the province.
Thanks to the selection of good breeds and semi-wild, free-range farming, the pigs have good resistance and reproduction. Up to now, his farm has increased to 130 wild boars, of which 18 are gilts, the rest are meat pigs and breeding pigs.
Mr. Phu shared: "Raising wild boars does not require much technique. Wild boars have high resistance so they are less susceptible to diseases. However, the cage must always be airy, clean, have a roof, and be higher than 2.5m to ensure coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter. For wild boars when they are in the breeding season, they are only kept in captivity and have lights to warm them when the ambient temperature drops."
It is known that he has received many orders from restaurants, hotels, and wild boar consumers in the province. " Last week, I sold more than 20 pigs, each weighing 15 - 30 kg, at a selling price of 130 - 140 thousand VND/kg of live pigs, after deducting expenses, I earned nearly 50 million VND " - Mr. Phu said.
From now until the end of the year, he will sell about 150 wild pigs. In the near future, Mr. Phu plans to invest in growing medicinal plants to make food to increase resistance and prevent diseases better for the pigs. He will also dig ponds to raise fish, raise ducks... to take advantage of livestock waste, ensure environmental sanitation and increase income.
Mr. Dau Quoc Phu is one of the active and dynamic members of the Youth Entrepreneurship Club of Nghi Xuan District Youth Union. The wild boar farming model of Phu promotes the spirit of youth being proactive in economic development, striving to get rich, contributing to building a rich and beautiful homeland.
