Sea cucumber is considered a specialty of the special zone.

The open sea area has a large coral reef and a flat reef about 600 m wide, forming a natural lagoon covered with seagrass. The island also has a group of echinoderms such as: starfish, sea urchins, especially sea cucumbers with many species. Along with king crabs, sea cucumbers used to be a famous specialty of the region, previously appearing a lot at the end of September but in recent years have become very rare.

With rich biological resources and diverse ecosystems, Phu Quy has great potential for developing fisheries and tourism, creating important advantages for the special economic zone.

In recent years, marine resources in Phu Quy have been depleted, many seafood species have become scarce. Long-time fishermen said that the use of illegal fishing gear, small-mesh nets, even explosives, high-power headlights, electric shocks, etc. have caused the seafood resources on the island to decline significantly year by year.

Protecting diverse resources

Fisherman Nguyen Tiet Xuong (Ngu Phung village) with more than 40 years of experience at sea said that about 30 years ago, Phu Quy sea area had countless sea urchins, fishermen pulled nets and caught them all. The urchins were used to soak in wine or make nutritious specialties such as porridge, skin soup, fried meat, grilled with lemongrass and chili... However, in recent years, Phu Quy has almost no urchins left, fishermen have to go to Truong Sa to catch a few with quite high prices, from 350,000 - 500,000 VND/kg. Many other seafood species are also gradually disappearing.

Mr. Nguyen Van Linh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quy Special Zone said that the pilot model of co-management of aquatic resources protection in Tan Thanh commune has created positive impacts, spreading to coastal localities. The government and people of Phu Quy want to apply this model locally to mobilize the community to participate in marine conservation and aquatic resources development. Lach Du area with more than 60 aquaculture facilities is very suitable for implementation, so he suggested that the Department of Fisheries, Seas and Islands soon provide guidance so that organizations and individuals engaged in aquaculture, seafood exploitation and service - tourism activities can participate systematically, contributing to the protection of marine resources and ecosystems.

Recently, the Provincial People's Committee requested to strengthen marine conservation, protect and restore aquatic resources and marine ecosystems. The People's Committees of coastal communes and wards and Phu Quy special zone were directed to promote communication and legal education to raise awareness and responsibility of relevant organizations and individuals. At the same time, encourage the community to participate in marine conservation, develop aquatic resources and launch the annual movement "All people participate in protecting, regenerating and developing aquatic resources".
