Mr. Akio Yoshida, Executive Chairman of AEON, said that so far Vietnam is the country in which the group has invested the most in the world , nearly 1.2 billion USD.

This information was announced by Mr. Akio Yoshida, Executive Chairman of AEON Group, at a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 20, on the occasion of attending the expanded G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

According to Mr. Akio Yoshida, AEON currently has 6 shopping malls in Vietnam, concentrated in big cities such as Hanoi , Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City. A shopping mall in Hue is expected to open next year.

To date, the group has poured more than 1.18 billion USD into Vietnam, the largest amount of capital AEON has invested in the world.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said that Vietnam has fundamental factors that Japanese investors like AEON can expand their business, such as consumption, which is identified as a growth driver. With a market of more than 100 million people, a young population and an increasing number of middle-class people, Vietnam strives to become an upper-middle-income country by 2030.

Japanese goods are popular with Vietnamese people, while Vietnamese goods are abundant with strengths in food, textiles, footwear and are being greened, suitable for the world's new consumption trends.

The Prime Minister suggested that AEON - Japan's leading retail group - choose Vietnam as its business base in the world, such as investing in more shopping malls and outlet malls combining shopping and entertainment in major cities and tourist centers of Vietnam.

He also suggested that AEON increase imports and bring Vietnamese goods into the group's global supply chain, especially leather and footwear, seafood, food and foodstuffs.

"Vietnam is building brands for products, investing in synchronous logistics services, creating favorable conditions, and reducing costs for products," said the Prime Minister.

In response to the Prime Minister's proposal, Mr. Akio Yoshida said that the group is planning to open 20 more shopping malls in Vietnam, focusing on supermarkets, entertainment centers and increasing the import of Vietnamese goods for distribution at more than 20,000 shopping malls in Japan. AEON will provide scholarships to support Vietnam in human resource training.

On the same day, receiving the leader of Mitsui Corporation - a member of the joint venture of investors in the Block B - O Mon gas project , Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh expressed regret that the Block B gas project had been stalled for many years, and that the partners in the joint venture had changed their investment direction, but Mitsui still persisted in pursuing the project.

Mr. Hirotaka Hamamoto, President of Mitsui Oil and Gas Exploration and Production Company, requested the Prime Minister to direct the resolution of difficulties to complete negotiations and sign contracts for gas purchase, transportation, and consumption, in order to implement the project from June 2023. This project aims to have the first gas in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The Block B gas project - one of the key projects supplying gas for power production in the South - has been stalled for many years. The Prime Minister said that over the past two years, the Government has urged to resolve the problems of this project, but the implementation in ministries and branches has been delayed. He affirmed that the problems of the project will be resolved in the near future and hoped that Block B gas will soon be exploited to serve power plants in O Mon (Can Tho).

He also suggested that Mitsui continue to cooperate in investing in Vietnam, especially in the field of green energy development to achieve the goal of reducing emissions to zero by 2050.

The Block B gas field development project is expected to have an estimated gas reserve of 107 billion m3 in 20 years, with a total cost of more than 11 billion USD and supply gas to power plants in Kien Giang and O Mon (Can Tho) areas.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will attend the 49th G7 Summit in Japan from May 20-21. This is the third time Vietnam has attended the summit and the second time at the invitation of Japan. This year, Vietnam is one of two Southeast Asian countries invited by Japan, along with Indonesia.

The 49th G7 Summit is part of the G7 Summit on May 19-22. The G7 includes advanced industrialized nations the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Canada and Italy, playing an important role in shaping and strengthening global governance and structure.
