Mo Gawdat, former chief business officer of Google X lab, bluntly stated on the podcast “Diary of a CEO” that artificial intelligence (AI) will target most jobs, regardless of whether you are in a leadership position or an entry-level employee.

“The idea that AI will create new jobs is ‘100% bullshit,’” he said, citing his AI startup – Emma.love – as an example, which he and two other software engineers developed solely with the help of AI, instead of needing “350 programmers like before.”

With more than 30 years in the tech industry and nearly five years at Google X, Gawdat has tackled global issues like energy, climate change and internet connectivity.

He believes that even jobs that seem “human” — like video editing, podcasting, and senior management — will disappear. “Artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be better than humans at everything, including being CEO,” he warns. “There will come a time when most of the weak CEOs will be replaced.”

Billionaires Mark Cuban and Jensen Huang offer a different perspective, arguing that AI isn’t all bad news. They say that combining AI skills with soft skills will make employees extremely competitive. Cuban hosts a free AI boot camp for kids, while Huang uses AI every day to compose, send emails, and get health advice.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs 2025 report says 41% of global employers plan to cut staff due to AI, but 77% will upskill employees to work with AI, and 47% will move employees into new roles.

While Gawdat acknowledges that the job market will be severely impacted, he sees the shift as opening up an opportunity to redefine the meaning of work. “We were never designed to wake up in the morning and fill 20 hours a day with work. We define the purpose of life as work. That’s a capitalist lie,” he says. He argues that an AI-powered society will require a universal basic income policy to ensure that all citizens have a source of income without having to work.

However, Gawdat also warned of the dangers of “power greed, selfishness and ego” if AI is under the control of “ignorant leaders”. He called for the use of AI to be accompanied by strict regulations and ethical standards.

Regardless of the views, one thing is undeniable: AI has moved beyond science fiction and is profoundly changing the way people live and work. “This is reality,” Gawdat asserted. “It’s not science fiction.”
