Who is at risk of cardiac arrest while jogging?

Jogging is a popular form of exercise, easy to do and brings many health benefits. However, there are some cases, both professional and amateur, jogging can cause cardiac arrest.

Although sudden death occurs while jogging, the probability of this happening is very low, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Data from the RACER Registry, a US tracking system for cardiac arrests associated with running, estimates the rate of cardiac arrest to be approximately 0.54 per 100,000 people. These estimates are based on marathon and half-marathon races.

During high-intensity physical activity, the risk of temporary cardiac arrest may increase, especially in people with pre-existing medical conditions. However, overall, the benefits of high-intensity physical activity far outweigh this risk.

Therefore, experts say that instead of being afraid of jogging or high-intensity exercise, it is necessary to identify those in the high-risk group and take measures to minimize the risk of cardiac arrest.

Factors that may increase the risk of cardiac arrest during high-intensity exercise include:

old age

People in their mid-60s have a higher risk of cardiac arrest when participating in long-distance running events such as marathons. This reflects that with increasing age, the probability of having underlying coronary artery disease or atherosclerosis increases.

Underlying cardiovascular disease

One of the leading causes of sudden death in young people is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick and prone to arrhythmia. This condition has been identified as the most common cause of sudden death in young athletes in the United States. Congenital coronary artery malformations are the second leading cause, accounting for approximately 17% of sudden death in young athletes.

Coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis

In older adults or long-term runners, underlying coronary artery disease is often the cause of myocardial infarction during running.

Although in regular runners, blood lipids, blood pressure, and blood sugar are often well controlled, small atherosclerotic plaques or arterial calcifications may still exist that are not detected by clinical tests.

Overloaded

Sudden, intense, prolonged exercise beyond the body's normal tolerance threshold can trigger serious cardiovascular events. This risk is especially high if there is an underlying heart disease factor.

Marathon or long-distance running can increase pressure, oxygen deficiency, electrolyte imbalance, temporary changes in the heart's electrocardiogram, thereby causing arrhythmia and increasing the risk of cardiac arrest.

To prevent cardiac arrest while running, runners need cardiovascular screening, especially those with suspicious symptoms such as dizziness, fainting during exercise or a family history of heart disease.

In addition, the intensity of exercise should be moderate, increasing slowly so that the body has enough ability to recover and adapt, avoiding sudden increases in intensity. If symptoms such as chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, nervousness, palpitations, dizziness or fainting appear while exercising, you should stop exercising and get a medical check-up immediately, according to Healthline .
