Ming-Chi Kuo, a veteran Apple analyst, revealed in his latest report on May 18 that the 2026 AirPods will be equipped with an infrared camera, similar to the part used for Face ID on iPhones and iPads. This feature can help the device work better with Vision Pro, and the next glasses.
Kuo further revealed that these AirPods will begin production in 2026 and could be used to help guide users to a location.
Computer vision information collected from AirPods equipped with infrared cameras can also be transmitted to other devices. Specifically, the AirPods camera can help collect Visual Intelligence information for the iPhone even when the phone is still in the user's pocket.
In fact, this upgrade was revealed in 2024 when in a post, Kuo said Apple planned to produce "AirPods with camera modules" in 2026. Previously in February 2024, Bloomberg also reported that Apple was developing AirPods with integrated cameras.
The long-awaited integration of live translation into AirPods will likely also appear in the iOS 19 update. According to a report from Bloomberg writer Mark Gurman, the feature works by directly translating speech (e.g. from Spanish to English) and playing the translation through the listener's AirPods.
The rumor mill also revealed that the AirPods Max will receive a significant hardware update in 2027. Notably, the iPhone maker is likely to redesign the over-ear headphones to reduce the overall weight of the product.
Previously, Apple introduced two new features for AirPods Max headphones. Since the iOS 18.4 update, the device will support extremely low latency and the ability to play high-quality audio (lossless) via USB-C cable.
