The Chinese Embassy in India has requested the Indian Navy to assist in the search and rescue of the missing crew members of the Chinese deep-sea fishing vessel "Lupeng Yuanyu 028" that capsized in the Southern Indian Ocean.
In a statement posted on Twitter, the Indian Navy said that after receiving a report about the incident of the Lupeng Yuanyu 028 ship sinking about 1,660km off the coast of India, the force mobilized a P-8I aircraft equipped with radar and electro-optical sensors to conduct aerial reconnaissance.
During May 17-18, P-8I aircraft conducted extensive searches despite adverse weather conditions and found several objects that could belong to the stricken ship. Later, a P-8I aircraft dropped life rafts and survival aids at sea after receiving a request from Chinese Navy warships. An Indian officer said Indian Navy units also coordinated search and rescue efforts with ships and aircraft from other countries in the region and guided the Chinese ships to the accident site. The Indian Navy continues to be deployed to provide all possible support to the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
On May 18, the Chinese Ministry of Transport confirmed that at least two people were killed while the rest were still missing after a fishing boat capsized carrying 39 people, including 17 Chinese, 17 Indonesians and 5 Filipinos.
