According to Vietnam+ , India is currently the country that owns the highest railway bridge in the world . The bridge named Chenab spans the Chenab River in the Jammu and Kashmir region, in Northern India. The Chenab Bridge is located at an altitude of 359m, about 29m higher than the Eiffel Tower.

In a press release in March, the Indian Railways Ministry said that after decades of construction, the Chenab Bridge will open to visitors in late December 2023 or January 2024.

The 1,315-meter-long bridge is part of a larger project to provide Indian rail access to the Kashmir Valley. In addition to the Chenab Bridge, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project involves two other structures that will set Indian records: the longest freight tunnel and the first cable-stayed bridge on Indian railways.

For Prime Minister Narendra Modi, investing in infrastructure like the Chenab Bridge and the rail network in general can be seen as an effective tool for social inclusion, expanding political influence, and connecting remote areas with major cities.

“The Chenab Bridge and the connectivity it represents will be promoted by India as a new development for the region,” said Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center.

Experts say linking Kashmir with the rest of India by train will especially boost the region's industries and agriculture by enabling all-weather rail connectivity between the valley and the rest of India.

Previously, the only road connecting Indian-controlled Kashmir to the rest of the country was the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu national highway. However, this route is often closed during the harshest winters and is also a frequent black spot for traffic accidents.
