Must order in advance

According to our records, the price of live pigs today in the regions fluctuates around 80,000 VND/kg, in some places in the southern provinces it reaches 83,000 VND/kg. According to many traders, the supply at the farms is still quite scarce, so the price of pork still tends to increase every day, there are times when the wholesalers cannot buy enough goods to serve the market.

Mr. Pham Van Hoc, a trader in Ninh Binh, said: Currently, the price of pork is high but many farms still do not have any to sell, making the supply even more scarce. To have good pigs, we even have to order from farms a month in advance.

As a person with decades of experience raising pigs in Ninh Binh, Mr. Hoang Van Dien said that at this time, his family's farm has about a few thousand pigs, of which not many are old enough to be sold.

"Compared to the cost of raising pigs, the farms that maintain the herd are currently making a fairly high profit of about 3 million VND/quintal of pigs," Mr. Dien affirmed.

According to Mr. Dien, the cost of raising pigs at small farms is lower than that at large enterprises and corporations by about 3,000 VND/kg of pigs. "Large livestock enterprises have to invest in a lot of equipment, hire a lot of workers... making the cost of raising pigs higher, reaching about 46,000 - 48,000 VND/quintal of live pigs. Meanwhile, small farms and households incur less costs, so the cost is lower, reaching about 43,000 - 45,000 VND/kg. However, although they make more profit, small-scale farmers are facing more disease risks," Mr. Dien affirmed.

Mr. Dien added that the continuous increase in pork prices is due to three main reasons. Firstly, the Law on Animal Husbandry has come into effect, 80% of farms in the southern provinces have to move out of residential areas, causing a significant decrease in supply in these areas. Secondly, the authorities have taken strong measures and tightened the import of pigs in the southern provinces, so almost no smuggled goods can cross the border. Thirdly, the epidemic, especially African swine fever, is still complicated, causing heavy losses to farmers in the provinces and cities.

"The reduced supply has pushed the price of live pigs up continuously. We believe that the price of this item will continue to increase and remain high from now until the end of 2025," Mr. Dien predicted.

Fearing risks, livestock farmers are cautious about restocking

According to information obtained by Dan Viet reporters, on March 5, Dabaco Group announced the selling price of breeding pigs up to nearly 3 million VND/pig. Specifically, 3-blood piglets for meat weighing 6.5 kg/pig are priced at 2.9 million VND, the remaining kg will be multiplied by the price of pork at the time of sale; 2-blood piglets (castrated male) for meat weighing 6.5 kg are priced at 2.7 million VND/pig, the remaining kg will be multiplied by the price of pork at the time of sale. The application period is from March 6.

Talking to us, a representative of Dabaco Group said that all the breeding pigs sold are given priority to customers of the feed dealer system of Dabaco's manufacturing plants.

Sharing more with PV Dan Viet, a representative of a livestock enterprise in the Central region that is raising over 70,000 pigs said: The company currently has over 6,000 sows, a large number of breeding pigs, but we do not sell them outside, but mainly to serve the local pig herd.

"At present, the company sells an average of 20,000 pigs per month and this number may increase in the coming months," he added.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang - Deputy Director of Hoa My Livestock Cooperative in Ung Hoa District (Hanoi) said that the price of piglets "follows" the price of live pigs, so it has also increased continuously. As of today, the price of piglets at large enterprises is about 2.5 million VND/pig, about 6-7kg; at small farms, it is about 2 million VND/kg.

"The price of piglets is high, but many large farms still do not sell them to the outside, but mainly keep them to multiply their herds for meat. Small farms are worried about the risk of disease and price storms, so they are hesitant to buy large quantities to raise and sell for meat," Mr. Thang affirmed.

Forecasting more about the supply of live pigs, Mr. Thang said: Compared to poultry farming, pig herd multiplication is more difficult and time-consuming. For example, farms buy sows and bring them to the farm, if everything goes well, they have to wait about 1 year to have commercial pigs to sell.

For households that buy piglets for meat, they have to wait about 5 months before they have commercial pigs to sell. "Because the price of piglets is too high, many farmers are both afraid of disease "ambushing" them and worried that when they have pigs to sell at a lower price, they will suffer losses, so at present, people are still increasing their herds very cautiously," Mr. Thang added.

African swine fever spreads rapidly, why are pig farmers still not interested in getting vaccinated?

Currently, African swine fever is still complicated in provinces and cities. However, according to our survey, many small farm owners and large livestock enterprises still do not dare to vaccinate. The reason is that farmers still do not trust the protection of the new vaccine.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thang - Deputy Director of Hoa My Livestock Cooperative said that every year we still vaccinate all kinds of vaccines for sows and meat pigs, such as blue ear, pneumonia, and classical swine fever vaccines. For foot-and-mouth disease vaccines, most farms in the cooperative wait and see when neighboring farms break out, then people vaccinate to protect the pigs.

"Compared to the current profit from pig farming, the cost of African swine fever vaccination is not too much, but we still do not dare to vaccinate because we are concerned about the protection and safety of the new vaccine," the Deputy Director of Hoa My Livestock Cooperative added.
