UK organizes evacuation of citizens in Sudan

The BBC on April 27 quoted "multiple sources in German politics " blaming Britain for the delay in the evacuation of German citizens in Sudan last weekend.

The Sudanese military initially refused to allow German aircraft to approach the airport north of the capital Khartoum after being angered by the unannounced presence of British military forces in the area.

The BBC quoted German Defense Minister Boris Pistorious as saying that British forces involved in the diplomatic mission evacuation operation "ignored the regulations set by the Sudanese army".

Speaking to British lawmakers on April 27, Mr. Cleverly said that the Berlin government had not raised the issue with London.

"As far as I know, the British side has never violated flight regulations and the evacuation has not caused any negative impact on other countries," POLITICO quoted Secretary of State Cleverly as saying on April 28.

Who are the two figures at the heart of Sudan's factional conflict?

The UK Ministry of Defence also dismissed the report, saying it was "inaccurate to suggest that efforts to evacuate British embassy staff in Sudan last weekend delayed Germany's plans".

"Operating in such complex situations is always challenging, but we have worked extremely closely with our French, American and especially German partners during the approach to the airfield in Sudan over the past week," the UK Ministry of Defence added.

Germany has not commented on the above information.

A power struggle between Sudan's military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has pushed the African nation into a new phase of conflict.

After evacuating the diplomatic corps, Britain expanded this effort from April 25. According to Downing Street, a total of seven flights have been organized to evacuate British citizens from Sudan since then.
