Real Madrid also suffered a loss when defender Camavinga was sent off in the 90+4th minute.

Arsenal's win also helped the Premier League officially guarantee five places in next season's Champions League, as the league maintained its top position in the UEFA rankings.

On the same day, in the other first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, Bayern Munich lost 1-2 to Inter Milan on a day when striker Harry Kane played below par.

Forwards Lautaro Martinez and Davide Frattesi scored for Inter Milan in the 38th and 88th minutes, while Thomas Muller scored a consolation goal for Bayern Munich. In the second leg, Bayern Munich will travel to San Siro to play Inter Milan again at 2am on April 17.
