After two consecutive defeats in domestic competitions against Man City and Southampton, Arsenal approached the match against Sporting Lisbon with considerable caution. Manager Mikel Arteta also faced difficulties as Arsenal were missing key players such as Bukayo Saka, Piero Hincapie, Jurrien Timber, and Eberechi Eze.
Conversely, Sporting Lisbon started the match with enthusiasm, cheered on by their home crowd. They played disciplined, solid football and launched sharp counter-attacks. This tactic caused Arsenal considerable difficulties in the first half.
Sporting Lisbon actually created more real dangerous opportunities. Unfortunately, the home team's strikers lacked the finesse to convert them into goals. The clearest chance was when Maximiliano Araujo's shot hit the crossbar of the Arsenal goal in the 6th minute.

Arsenal only really found their rhythm in the game towards the beginning of the first half. However, the visitors' attack failed to create the necessary pressure on the opponent's goal, as their attacks were disjointed and lacked creativity.
This pattern continued in the second half as Lisbon continued to trouble Arteta's side. In the 90+1 minute, when everyone thought a draw was inevitable, Kai Havertz, who had been brought on as a substitute in the second half, shone brightly.
Originating from an attack down the left wing, Gabriel Martinelli broke free and delivered a superb pass to Havertz, who controlled the ball neatly before finishing into the net against Sporting Lisbon, giving Arsenal a 1-0 victory.
With this result, Arsenal gained a significant advantage going into the second leg at their home ground, Emirates Stadium.
