According to VNA correspondent in Phnom Penh, in the men's weightlifting category 49 kg, weightlifter Le Van Cong excellently completed his performance, surpassing 5 other athletes, bringing the Vietnamese delegation 2 more gold medals, including: 1 gold medal for the highest clean and jerk result (168 kg) and 1 gold medal for the total lift (496 kg). Following closely behind the score of the Vietnamese champion, athlete A. Hadi of Indonesia won 2 silver medals with the highest clean and jerk result of 166 kg and the total lift of 489 kg. 2 bronze medals in the men's weightlifting category 49 kg also belonged to Indonesia with the achievement of athlete Nur Irmansyah.
In the men's 54 kg weightlifting event, two weightlifters Nguyen Binh An and Huynh Ngoc Phung excellently ranked first and second, bringing home 2 gold and 2 silver medals for the Vietnamese delegation. In the 3 weightlifting rounds, the two athletes Nguyen Binh An and Huynh Ngoc Phung both chose to lift weights that were relatively different from their opponents from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia. Binh An and Ngoc Phung were also the only two weightlifters to complete and be counted for all 3 weightlifting rounds. With a top clean and jerk of 145 kg and a total of 429 kg, Nguyen Binh An won 2 gold medals for the 54 kg category, while Huynh Ngoc Phung brought home 2 silver medals with a clean and jerk of 133 kg and a total of 392 kg.
Speaking to VNA reporters, athlete Le Van Cong expressed his satisfaction with his performance. After a period of injury treatment, thanks to his efforts in training and physical therapy, Le Van Cong has now recovered 80% of his physical strength. Today's result is a positive signal for this weightlifter in his preparation for the world championship, the Asian Games (ASIAD) and beyond, he hopes to regain the "lost" medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.
Athlete Le Van Cong also wanted to send a message of encouragement to all his teammates preparing for the competition: always be confident, although each disabled person's circumstances are different, their will is immense and has been recognized by society. He expressed his hope that the athletes will make efforts on the competition floor, bringing good things for themselves and bringing glory to the country.
