On the afternoon of June 4, at Morodok Techo National Stadium in the capital Phnom Penh of Cambodia, athlete Nguyen Thi Hai was the first person to bring home a Gold medal for the Vietnam Para Athletics Team.
In the women's shot put category F57, Nguyen Thi Hai achieved a score of 8.6m, leaving behind the two athletes who followed (also from Indonesia): Reni Ariyanti - who won the Silver medal with a score of 7.57m; and Seriwati Seriwati - who won the Bronze medal with a score of 7.3m.
Nguyen Thi Hai is one of the most successful F57 female disabled athletes of Vietnam Athletics.
At the 11th ASEAN Para Games held in Indonesia in August 2022, she won 3 gold medals. Nguyen Thi Hai's forte is sitting throwing events such as javelin, discus and shot put.
Nguyen Thi Hai's brightest milestone was the feat of 24m88, surpassing the world record in discus throw, helping her win the Para Games Gold medal in 2014.
To achieve the success she has today, this female athlete born in 1985, from Nghe An , has overcome the inferiority complex of losing her healthy legs at the age of 3 after an illness. Nguyen Thi Hai is trying to maintain a stable performance to get a place to participate in the 2024 Paris Paralympics in France.
She and her husband, athlete Cao Ngoc Hung, are two prominent faces among the 26 Vietnamese athletes competing at the 12th ASEAN Para Games.
The Vietnam Athletics Team does not set high targets for its athletes to create mental comfort. The team will try to compete well to at least repeat the achievement of winning 15 gold medals like at the 11th ASEAN Para Games held in Indonesia in August 2022.
Previously, at the Aquatics Palace at Morodok Techo National Stadium on the outskirts of Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh, Vi Thi Hang (S7 disability category) successfully finished first in the women's 400m freestyle swimming event, with a time of 6 minutes 57 seconds 95.
Finishing second (7 minutes 12 seconds 69) was athlete Chantha Thoeun of the host country Cambodia. Vi Thi Hang's speed also helped her set a new Southeast Asian record, breaking the old record of 9 minutes 34 seconds 94.
Athlete Dang Thi Linh Phuong won the first two gold medals in weightlifting for the Vietnam Disabled Sports Delegation, including one gold medal for the highest clean and jerk performance (95kg) and one gold medal for the total performance (279kg)./.
