Among the many highly effective agricultural models of farmers in Bung Tau town (Phung Hiep district, Hau Giang province), it is impossible not to mention the soft-shell turtle farming model that has been successfully applied by the people here, making the family economy increasingly rich.
A typical example is Ms. Nguyen Thi Dieu, a typical household raising soft-shell turtles with high economic efficiency in Tan Hung hamlet, Bun Tau town, Phung Hiep district, Hau Giang province.
Ms. Dieu realized that the large garden land, abundant local food sources such as snails, fish, and small shrimps, were very suitable for aquaculture, along with the high market demand for soft-shell turtle meat products, so Ms. Dieu's family boldly invested in soft-shell turtle farming.

With the diligence of farmers and the spirit of eagerness to learn, boldly apply scientific and technical advances and practical experience.
From a commercial turtle pond with an initial area of 300 m2, her family has now developed it into 10 ponds including: 4 commercial turtle ponds and 6 turtle breeding ponds, with a total area of 2000 m2.
Every year, her family supplies the market with about 3,000 commercial soft-shell turtles and 60,000 soft-shell turtle breeds.
The price of commercial soft-shell turtles is 150,000 VND - 180,000 VND/kg. Soft-shell turtles are priced at 2,000 VND - 3,500 VND/each depending on the time.
In addition to raising soft-shell turtles, she also provides food and purchases soft-shell turtle meat and soft-shell turtle breeding from neighboring households to supply to the market. After deducting all expenses, she earns a profit of nearly 200 million VND for her family every year from this specialty breeding model.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Dieu, a household raising soft-shell turtles with high economic efficiency in Tan Hung hamlet, Bun Tau town, Phung Hiep district, Hau Giang province, chooses soft-shell turtle breeds.
Sharing her experience in raising soft-shell turtles, Ms. Dieu said: “Raising soft-shell turtles is not difficult, but requires careful care. During the feeding process, if you see that the soft-shell turtles show unusual signs, you must handle them immediately. The pond must be near a clean water source, with easy water supply and drainage, quiet, and close to the house for convenient care and protection.
Around the pond for raising soft-shell turtles, you need to build a wall or fence made of corrugated iron 50 - 60 cm high to prevent the turtles from escaping. The distance between the pond bank and the protective wall should be about 1 meter wide for the turtles to sunbathe.
Soft-shell turtles can be fed with industrial food, fish, shrimp, snails, and pureed food. Soft-shell turtles should be fed using a trough placed on the water surface, for easy monitoring and to limit food from dissolving into the water and polluting the pond. The amount of food in the trough should be checked daily to adjust promptly to avoid overfeeding, which can pollute the pond and make the soft-shell turtle susceptible to disease.
The soft-shell turtle farming model is currently bringing high economic efficiency to many farmers in Tan Hung hamlet, Bung Tau town, Phung Hiep district (Hau Giang province) and promises to continue to expand and develop in the coming time.
