Poland declares tough action against immigrants who violate the law

On February 7, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that the government will plan to deport immigrants who violate the country's laws as Warsaw approaches the presidential election next May.

According to AFP news agency, at a press conference in the port city of Gdansk with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Prime Minister Tusk said: "Anyone who is received in Poland, enjoys our hospitality but seriously violates the law will be deported."

The government is drawing up a “plan to immediately respond to organized crime and violent crime committed by foreigners,” he added, with the outlines of the plan, drawn up by Poland’s Justice and Interior ministries, set to be published in the coming days.

In recent months, Mr. Tusk, the head of a centrist faction facing a threat from nationalist parties in the presidential election in May, has said he would temporarily remove some rights for refugees and advocated cutting benefits for Ukrainian refugees.

On the same day, February 7, the leader also declared that Poland would not accept any "burden" related to the European Union's (EU) migrant distribution plan.

"If anyone in Europe says that Poland should shoulder more of the burden, whoever it is, I will tell them that Warsaw will not do it. End of story," Mr Tusk stressed.

Poland's head of government said the country had "opened its borders and hearts to 2 million refugees from Ukraine" after Russia's special military operation and was facing illegal immigration across the border with Belarus.
