Doctor tells story of being 'psychologically manipulated', almost falling into a scam trap after looking up insurance information

Recently, the trick of impersonating health insurance employees to commit fraud has been continuously happening. Although the agencies have continuously warned, these subjects have changed their tricks, even causing doctors to be "psychologically manipulated", almost falling into the fraud trap.

On June 25, Dr. Quan The Dan, professional director of Tri Duc Thanh General Hospital - Thanh Hoa, shared a story of being "psychologically manipulated" by a scammer and almost falling into a trap.

Doctor Dan shared the story that started with a 26-year-old male patient who had a traffic accident, broke his cervical vertebrae, was paralyzed and had to be completely on a ventilator. The family was poor, did not have a health insurance card, and had to borrow money from everywhere to cover the treatment costs of hundreds of millions of dong. However, the newly purchased health insurance card would not be valid for more than 20 days.

This incident prompted Dr. Dan to go online to learn more about insurance policies. And from here, he almost became a victim of a systematic scam, disguised as "government officials supporting electronic social insurance declaration".

Doctor Dan recounted that early in the morning he received a call from a person claiming to be a social and cultural officer of the ward, addressing him intimately and speaking enthusiastically: "Mr. Dan, I am from the social and cultural department of the ward. Please bring your ID and health insurance card to fill out the VssID form!"

Because he was on a business trip, the doctor asked for permission to not go to the ward. The other person immediately suggested: "Give me Mr. Tuan's phone number at the district social insurance office, I will call him to guide me to fill out the online application."

Immediately after that, Mr. Dan received instructions from "Mr. Tuan" - a male voice claiming to be an insurance officer, asking him to borrow another phone to record his screen, to facilitate "visual instructions".

This person requested to access a website address baohiemxahoi.me, then complete the registration procedure with requirements to declare ID, health insurance card, bank account, portrait photo and press the send button.

"At that time, the network was unstable, I pressed the button twice but still couldn't send it. He told me to keep it to see the response, but at that moment, the IT technician in the hospital told me to stop immediately, because the ".me" address is not the suffix of a Vietnamese government agency," the doctor recounted.

Startled, the doctor immediately asked "Tuan" to turn on the camera to verify that he worked at the district Social Security office, but this person refused. Knowing for sure it was a scam, the doctor turned off the phone and immediately called the bank to check the information.

Luckily the OTP code has not been revealed so the account is still safe.

In recent times, not only have they exploited people's trust, but they have also impersonated government officials, used friendly language, created a sense of urgency and provided enthusiastic support to trick people into falling into "traps". The act of faking public service websites with interfaces that are almost identical to the original is a sophisticated trick that can easily mislead people.

This is not the first case of people falling into the trap of fraud by subjects "pretending" to be social insurance employees. Previously, many people were tricked into downloading the ViSSID app, or information on fake websites, Fanfage,...

Pay attention to domain names and applications

The official website of Vietnam Social Security is https://baohiemxahoi.gov.vn - always has the national domain name ending .gov.vn. People need to be especially wary of strange websites with strange domain names such as .me, .xyz, .top, com...

The Social Security Agency never asks for bank account information or OTP codes via phone or social networks.

When you need support regarding health insurance and electronic social insurance, please contact hotline 19009068 or visit baohiemxahoi.gov.vn.

Do not access or declare information on websites of unknown origin.
