The Hai Duong Provincial Agricultural Extension Center has just handed over 8 million earthworm seeds to 10 households in An Thanh Commune (Tu Ky, Hai Duong) participating in the Project of Building a model of earthworm farming combined with rice production and linking product consumption.

The project is implemented by the National Agricultural Extension Center from 2023 - 2025 in Hai Duong, Thai Binh provinces and Hai Phong city.

In Hai Duong, the project has handed over a total of 26 million rươi seeds to 17 households in An Thanh commune to release in the rươi and clam exploitation area combined with organic rice cultivation.

The above number of worms were produced artificially at a breeding facility in Hai Phong City. The price of worm seeds ranges from 16 to 20 VND/piece. Households participating in the model are supported by the project with 50% of the price of worm seeds, biological products and technical training.

The project has contributed to encouraging farmers in An Thanh commune to actively produce organically, increase productivity and quality of commercial earthworms... With the supported number of earthworm seeds, the above households have raised them on an area of 26 hectares.

In the past 3 years, the productivity of earthworms exploited in the area supported by the project has reached an average of 30 - 40 kg/sao, an increase of 5 - 10% compared to naturally exploited areas.

An Thanh commune has the largest area for exploiting earthworms and clams combined with growing organic rice in Hai Duong province with about 137 hectares outside the Thai Binh river dike and 214 hectares in the fields.

Since 2010, farmers in the commune have started growing organic rice in these areas, saying no to the use of pesticides and herbicides to sustainably exploit earthworms and clams.

These two specialties are popular in the market, contributing to increasing the income value per unit of local agricultural land area, reaching 450 - 500 million VND/ha/year.
