Delegates attending the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Labor & Social Newspaper.
Exactly 30 years ago, on August 25, 1993, the Labor and Social Affairs Newspaper was born, the first newspaper of the Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs (LĐTB&XH) sector, joining in the process of national renewal and the renewal of the Vietnamese press. But to have this birth, few people know that it was a huge effort.
According to the memoirs of journalist Nguyen Ngoc Nien - former Editor-in-Chief of the Labor & Society newspaper - who devoted almost his entire enthusiastic youth to the development of the newspaper: In the 80s of the 20th century, our country was facing countless difficult challenges: The problem of solving employment in society was a burning issue; The wage policy after the failure of the Price - Wage - Money reform in 1985 was an extremely difficult problem; The policy for people with meritorious services to the country and solving the post-war consequences of a country that had gone through endless wars, etc., etc. The fields of labor and society were truly becoming two major national issues!....
Minister Tran Dinh Hoan visited and worked at the Labor & Social Affairs Newspaper.
In that context, the head of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs at that time - Doctor, Minister, Member of the Party Central Committee Tran Dinh Hoan - was deeply concerned about the need to have a newspaper as the mouthpiece of the sector to act as a tool to propagate guidelines, policies, and policy planning and to receive feedback from practical life so that policies could be planned more and more perfectly. At that time, although it was a large ministry of the Government with extremely heavy responsibilities, there was only one research magazine, so it could not widely disseminate the work areas of the sector. His idea of launching a new newspaper was popularized and communicated within the leadership and the entire Ministry.
Former Editor-in-Chief Nguyen Ngoc Nien recalls memories of the early days of the newspaper.
Also according to journalist Nguyen Ngoc Nien, the chosen newspaper brand name, Labor & Society, is also very meaningful, this name conveys the entire message about a newspaper that is the mouthpiece of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.
The newspaper's founding date also has special significance. “In early August 1993, all preparations for the birth of the Newspaper were completed. Now it was time to choose a good time for the Newspaper to be born. The first editorial board of the Newspaper included Hero Trinh To Tam, Mr. Le Van Minh, Mr. Kim Quoc Hoa and I, all of whom came from the military. To preserve a beautiful and heroic memory, we presented a plan to Minister Tran Dinh Hoan and Deputy Minister Trinh To Tam to allow choosing August 25 - the birthday of General Vo Nguyen Giap - the eldest brother of the Vietnam People's Army, as the founding date. This initiative immediately received the support of the Ministry's leaders. For that reason, the Labor & Social Newspaper had a very meaningful birthday. On August 25, 1993, after a short time of urgent organization and operation, the first issue was officially born and widely distributed nationwide. Before that, on the night of August 21, 1993, the first issue The first copy was printed in Ho Chi Minh City and was flown to Hanoi on August 23. On August 24, the newspaper officially held a launching ceremony in Hanoi and on its birth day, August 25, the newspaper held a very solemn launching ceremony at the Reunification Palace, Ho Chi Minh City." - journalist Nguyen Ngoc Nien shared.
A very good thing, as shared by Deputy Editor-in-Chief Nguyen Thu Hang, right from the first days of its establishment, the newspaper Lao Dong & Xa Hoi has attracted many reporters and sharp writers in the journalism community to join. Localities, establishments, and businesses all bought the newspaper Lao Dong & Xa Hoi, the circulation was very high. From a printed newspaper in the South, published every 2 weeks, the newspaper increased to 1 issue per week, then 2 issues per week, by the second year, on August 31, 1995, with the policy of continuous improvement to meet the information needs, the newspaper has comprehensively innovated its content and form, introduced a new series to readers and increased to 3 issues per week.
The newspaper quickly established pages and columns on labor, employment, vocational training, meritorious people... bearing the identity of the newspaper of the Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs sector. All activities of the Ministry and sector are mentioned and reflected quickly, fully and in-depth by the newspaper...

In the context of increasing online newspapers and a clear decrease in printed newspaper readers, Labor & Society Newspaper still strives to find every way to maintain a stable circulation. With 3 issues published per week, the circulation reaches an average of over 10,000 copies per issue.
The newspaper also made its mark with many communication activities and event organization. The programs coordinated by the newspaper were all successful, prestigious, and achieved the set goals. There have been many events organized by the newspaper that left a good impression on readers and social groups such as the cultural exchange program "Sacred Fatherland" at the Opera House in 2016 (later "Sacred Vietnam"). In 2018, the program "Sacred Fatherland" allocated funds to organize gift giving to policy beneficiaries in Vinh Loc district (Thanh Hoa) with an amount of nearly 200 million VND. In addition, other programs and events such as the Award to honor businesses with excellent human resource policies: "Vietnam HR Awards", "Top 100 best products and services for families and children" have been maintained and operated effectively over the past 10 years.
Social and charitable activities such as giving gifts to children in special circumstances, families with meritorious services, caring for heroic Vietnamese mothers, building houses of gratitude, giving gifts to poor people in remote areas... are regularly organized by the Newspaper every year.
In the 30-year development journey of the Labor & Social Affairs Newspaper, as affirmed by Deputy Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Ha, the Labor & Social Affairs Newspaper has made great strides. The Labor & Social Affairs Newspaper, the Dan Sinh electronic newspaper, the special page and the publication For Children have always followed their principles and purposes, taking the lead in communicating policies and laws on social security, labor, employment, meritorious people, prevention of social evils, children, and gender equality; performing well as the Ministry's mouthpiece, the people's forum, actively propagating the Party's guidelines, the State's policies and laws, contributing to creating consensus in society, strengthening people's trust in the leadership of the Party and the State in the fields of labor, meritorious people and society.
The life of journalism and media is undergoing strong changes. As for the Labor & Social Affairs newspaper, in the coming time, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs will continue to implement step 2 of the planning and rearrangement of the Ministry's press agencies. The newspaper may continue to have major changes in organizational structure and personnel. There will probably be many challenges ahead.
Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Ha awarded the Certificate of Merit from the Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to the Labor & Social Affairs Newspaper for its many contributions to the development of the Newspaper.
