Hundreds of people were evacuated earlier as the storm, with winds of more than 144 km/h, brought heavy rain and flooding to parts of England. Some communities were surrounded and isolated by floodwaters, while a man in his 50s in Bath died when a tree fell on his car on January 2. The storm and floods also caused power outages and disrupted rail and road traffic in England.
Heavy rains also flooded many houses in the town of Arques in northern France. A woman in the Belgian province of East Flanders died on January 2 when a fence was blown away by strong winds during heavy rain. Meanwhile, in northern European countries such as Norway, Sweden and Finland, plunging temperatures and heavy snowfall have affected many activities in some areas.
