Protect agricultural production to reduce double losses

During the heavy rains that have lasted from mid-November until now, the province's crop sector has recorded the heaviest damage in many years. According to statistics up to November 25, the whole province has 54 communes and wards with crop damage, the total affected area is up to 15,533.74 hectares, estimated damage of more than 450 billion VND.

Quickly overcome the consequences of flooding

Mr. Nguyen Duc Thuan - Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Department of Agriculture and Environment) said that the damage was mainly concentrated in 3 large groups of crops, including: 9,705.95 hectares of rice were deeply flooded and felled due to prolonged heavy rain; 3,573.99 hectares of annual crops (vegetables, corn, onions, chili...) were washed away or had rotten roots; 2,253.8 hectares of perennial trees were affected, of which many mango, apple, and fruit trees had rotten roots and lost fruit.

Many areas of fruit trees in Bac Ai Tay commune were uprooted after a long period of heavy rain and floods.

In Ninh Hai commune, many rice and crop areas were completely damaged. "The rice area alone was up to 855 hectares damaged; 70 hectares of aquaculture were swept away by floodwaters. The total damage to the commune is estimated at about 144.7 billion VND" - Chairman of Ninh Hai Commune People's Committee Nguyen Khac Hoa said. In Do Vinh ward, heavy rains caused many rice and crop areas of the people to be flooded and covered with thick mud. Rice alone was damaged by more than 118 hectares; annual crops, although not large in area, were completely damaged; many areas of grass and perennial plants were also affected. Some rice fields were silted up and eroded, requiring a long time to recover. The locality has sent forces to support people in draining water, cleaning the fields, and proactively overcoming the situation early to reduce the risk of total loss. Mr. Le Kim Hiep - Chairman of the Ward People's Committee said that the ward is continuing to review the damage, propose support for seeds, agricultural materials and guide people to treat the land and restore crops after the water recedes.

Mr. Vo Van Cong - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment: Natural disasters in Khanh Hoa are shifting from "stronger" to "more continuous". The only solution to protect production is to shift from passive response to proactive long-term adaptation to extreme climate. The focus includes: Reviewing planting area planning according to the level of climate risk; flexibly reorganizing crop structure, avoiding production during peak storms; developing flood-resistant and salt-resistant varieties to reduce damage in extreme conditions and investing heavily in drainage systems, increasing pumping station capacity and renovating canals.

Proactivity is key to protecting production

To proactively respond to storm No. 15, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has activated the highest measures to protect crop production. Mr. Vo Van Cong - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment emphasized: "Storm No. 15 is likely to strengthen and develop complicatedly, while the province's crop production is recovering after a long period of heavy rain and floods. Therefore, the unit has requested localities to absolutely not be subjective, must complete the work of draining water, reinforcing crops and checking the entire canal system before November 27. The goal is to minimize double damage to production."

v
People in Ninh Hai commune cultivate onion fields and remove rotten and wilted plants before storm No. 15 approaches the mainland.

Specifically, for the summer-autumn rice crop, make full use of the drainage system and manual measures to dry the fields quickly. For ripe and fallen rice, it is necessary to harvest immediately according to the motto "green at home is better than old in the field"; overcome silting, wash mud and reduce 10% of nitrogen fertilizer in the first fertilization to limit plant weakening. For vegetables, remove damaged plants, cover the soil around the base to regenerate the root system; increase Trichoderma and Bacillus microorganisms to decompose organic matter, limit root rot and wilt diseases; add foliar fertilizer and trace elements according to the principle "from thin to thick" to avoid nutritional shock. For fruit trees and perennial trees, it is necessary to drain water thoroughly, erect and fix leaning trees; add decomposed organic fertilizer combined with antagonistic fungi to restore the root system and closely monitor root rot, gummosis, and leaf burn, which are prone to outbreaks after floods. In particular, in steep hilly areas at risk of landslides and soil erosion, it is necessary to make drainage ditches, barriers, and plant cover crops to limit erosion.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment also requested the agricultural extension and cultivation systems in localities to increase their 24/7 duty, monitoring the strong winds and heavy rains that storm No. 15 may cause from November 27 to 29. “Extreme natural disasters are not only stronger, but also more frequent. Proactive response is the only solution to minimize damage and protect the livelihoods of tens of thousands of farming households in the province,” Mr. Vo Van Cong emphasized.
