Ms. Leonie, a German national, said a friend showed her the bamboo workshop of Mr. Vo Tan Tan. When she arrived, she was truly amazed by the items of all shapes and sizes made entirely from bamboo.

According to Ms. Leonie, the person who makes these items not only has skill but also a great love for bamboo.

"Looking at bamboo items, I thought people used soft materials to mold them, not bend and join them from a sturdy plant like bamboo.

"I hope I can make something myself to give to my mother in Germany," said Leonie.

After graduating from university, Mr. Tan did not work in the city but returned to build a bamboo handicraft workshop, welcoming the wave of tourists from all over the world flocking to Hoi An.

Bringing Vietnamese bamboo image to the world

Entering Mr. Vo Tan Tan's bamboo workshop, everyone is overwhelmed by the items created by the hands and creative minds of bamboo artisans.

From the thorny trees that grow in clumps near ponds, he cuts them down, soaks, processes them and then creates everything. Some of his bamboo products are sophisticated, magnificent and awe-inspiring to visitors, such as giant carp, dragon bridge models, crabs, shrimps, etc.

All are ordered by customers and made over many months, ranging in size from small to large, some items weigh tens of kilos, large enough for 2-3 people to hug. The value of these items can sometimes reach tens of millions of dong.

According to Mr. Tan, bamboo is a plant closely associated with the lives of Vietnamese people. This plant is everywhere, entering the subconscious, folk songs, proverbs, songs...

But bamboo from ancient times to the present has had little economic value and is only a raw material for daily life activities in rural areas.

When he saw Hoi An tourism boom and realized the strong energy of this tree, he pursued a creative path to make bamboo appear in another life. Bamboo must be beautiful, luxurious and have a higher value.

Raising the stature of bamboo

To make the bamboo flexible, beautiful in color and strong enough to bend into objects of different shapes, Mr. Tan learned how to choose old bamboo according to the experience of the ancients. After being cut, the bamboo is chopped into pieces, pressed into young mud and soaked for many months.

This soaking process not only helps bamboo become more durable and flexible, but also has the effect of preventing termites. The crafted objects have a characteristic smell and can last a long time in harsh hot and humid weather conditions.

Not stopping at the small bamboo workshop along the Hoi An river, Mr. Vo Tan Tan's bamboo products are now present in 4-5 star hotels, famous tourist areas and are brought back home by visitors from all over the world.
