US Election 2024: Donald Trump becomes the first former President to be convicted of a crime

On May 30, a court in New York convicted former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate in the 2024 election.

According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in the US, at the end of a seven-week trial, a 12-member jury at the Manhattan Supreme Court found Donald Trump guilty on all 34 counts in the case of the billionaire falsifying business records to pay hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. With this verdict, Donald Trump became the first former president in US history to be convicted of a criminal offense. Prosecutors accused Trump of being involved in a conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 election and of acting to conceal the payment to Stormy Daniels so that the star would not reveal that she had an affair with Trump in a Lake Tahoe hotel room in 2006.

As he left the courtroom, former President Donald Trump denounced the court's ruling as "unfair, disgraceful and fraudulent." The Republican presidential candidate also criticized President Joe Biden's administration for fraud and plotting to hurt his political opponent.

Judge Juan Merchan said Trump’s sentencing hearing will take place on July 11, just three days before the Republican National Convention. According to the New York Times, Donald Trump could face a sentence of 16 months to four years in prison. However, due to his age and clean record, Trump could serve a shorter sentence or not be incarcerated at all.
