Langley Air Force Base, located in one of America's most strategic areas, faced a mysterious wave of drone intrusions throughout last December.
The military website The War Zone has been investigating the incident for weeks. Last weekend, the U.S. Air Force confirmed that the intrusions did occur and that they are looking into the matter.
The mysterious intrusions of UAVs highlight the growing threat posed by these small, inexpensive, yet dangerous devices both on and off the battlefield.
A spokesperson for Langley Air Force Base said: "We first detected the drones on the evening of December 6th, and these devices have been intruding throughout December 2023. The number and size of the drones in each intrusion varied. None of the intrusions showed signs of hostile activity, but anything flying in restricted airspace can pose a threat to the safety of flights within the base."
The official confirmed that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was aware of the mysterious intrusions. He declined to provide further details for security reasons, but affirmed that the Air Force would take necessary measures and cooperate with relevant local and federal agencies.

Langley, in Virginia, is one of the few bases that houses F-22 stealth fighter jets. The base plays a crucial role in supporting the operations of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the Northern Command, two units tasked with protecting the U.S. mainland.
Langley is located in the Newport News area, home to crucial U.S. commercial and naval shipbuilding facilities. The base is situated near the base of approximately half of the U.S. carrier fleet, located just southeast of the base. A number of other military facilities are also scattered throughout the broader area.
According to observers, the mysterious drone intrusions at Langley appear to have provoked a negative reaction within the U.S. military. This is a crucial air base tasked with protecting U.S. airspace, but the repeated drone intrusions raise questions about potential future security threats.
