On August 8, information from City International Hospital ( Ho Chi Minh City) said that this unit has just treated and improved the motor function of a Cambodian girl after the sequelae of a serious traumatic brain injury.
Nearly a month ago, a 14-year-old girl, Toun Sreynich, from Cambodia, was involved in a traffic accident while riding an electric bicycle. The accident left the child in a deep coma, with multiple organ damage: a broken left collarbone, a collapsed lung, liver and kidney injuries, and especially a severe traumatic brain injury.
At the hospital in Cambodia, he was put on a ventilator via endotracheal tube, fed through a nasogastric tube, given blood transfusions and intensive care. After 10 days, he passed the critical stage, but the recovery process was difficult due to limited medical conditions. With faith in the expertise of Vietnamese doctors, the family decided to bring him to Vietnam to seek a chance for recovery.
At City International Hospital, doctors determined that this was a very serious case: the central nervous system was severely damaged, the liver and kidneys had not recovered from previous damage, muscle strength was reduced, and reflexes were weak. The girl had almost completely lost the ability to communicate and move and was completely dependent on medical care.
A comprehensive treatment plan for the Cambodian girl was implemented, including intravenous nutrition with individualized nutrition, treatment of pressure ulcers, infection control, and daily physical therapy to maintain respiratory function and restart central nervous system activity.
Doctor Nguyen Thi Hong Cam, Department of Pediatrics, City International Hospital said that in addition to treating organ damage, doctors also have to activate each vital ability of the child, from active breathing, swallowing reflex, alertness, to emotions and perception.
After 10 days of treatment, the girl began to react to surrounding stimuli: her eyes moved, her hands moved slightly, then she began to eat a few spoonfuls of milk, kept breathing naturally, and made a few discrete sounds... After more than 2 weeks of treatment, the girl gradually recovered and was discharged from the hospital. However, according to the doctors, she will have to continue physical therapy at home, monitor neurological indicators, practice movement and learn to communicate...
It is known that Toun Sreynich's father is a teacher who has taught volunteer classes in Cambodia for many years. As soon as Toun Sreynich had an accident, many Cambodians joined hands to donate to support the child's treatment costs in Cambodia and Vietnam./.
