To achieve the title of “Excellent Breastfeeding Practice Hospital”, for nearly three years, Duc Giang General Hospital has continuously updated advances and applied the essential care standards for mothers and newborns of the Ministry of Health and according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization. At the same time, it has undergone a comprehensive evaluation process by functional units.
On the other hand, in order to encourage and help mothers believe in the benefits of breast milk, the hospital has implemented many diverse forms of propaganda such as: printing leaflets, organizing prenatal classes, weekly breastfeeding counseling sessions with dedicated guidance from a team of well-trained doctors and nurses.
Currently, 96% of newborns at the hospital receive skin-to-skin contact for 90 minutes after birth and are breastfed within the first hour of life. The hospital also effectively implements Kangaroo Care for premature, low birth weight or sick babies.
In addition, Duc Giang General Hospital also cooperated with the National Children's Hospital to establish a satellite breast milk bank, helping newborns have the opportunity to access precious pasteurized breast milk in cases where mothers cannot breastfeed immediately after birth.

Deputy Director of the Department of Mothers and Children (Ministry of Health ) Nguyen Van Chi said that breastfeeding is the most important measure to help improve the life and health of children. To ensure that all children are exclusively breastfed and have safe access to this milk, the Ministry of Health has implemented the implementation of excellent breastfeeding practice hospitals. The implementation of excellent breastfeeding practice hospitals will promote medical examination and treatment facilities with obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics to properly implement the Ministry of Health's guidelines on breastfeeding support, early essential newborn care and Kangaroo care. These interventions will increase the rate of children being breastfed within the first hour after birth and being exclusively breastfed for the first six months.
To meet the criteria of "Hospital for excellent breastfeeding practice", in addition to the assessment of professional agencies, for the first time, feedback from mothers and their families was included as a component of the assessment and recognition process. The assessment through feedback from mothers on the hospital's services follows the Ministry of Health's policy of aiming at the satisfaction of patients and their families.
Duc Giang General Hospital is the first public hospital in Hanoi to achieve the title after three years of continuous efforts.
Notably, with the strength of being a general hospital with coordination of obstetrics, pediatrics, and nutrition, Duc Giang General Hospital is building a model towards comprehensive care, prevention, and management of gestational diabetes in the context of the rate of gestational diabetes increasing to 25% in Vietnam.
The leaders of the Department of Mothers and Children also requested Duc Giang General Hospital to continue promoting and maintaining the achieved results, contributing to encouraging and supporting mothers to breastfeed, ensuring that all newborns are best nourished with breast milk in the first years of life. Requested the Hanoi Department of Health to continue directing and maintaining the implementation of professional support activities for medical examination and treatment at all levels in the area; Duc Giang General Hospital supports hospitals assigned to direct expertise with obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics to achieve this title.

Associate Professor, Dr. Do Dinh Tung, Director of Duc Giang General Hospital expressed his honor and pride when being recognized by the Ministry of Health as an “Excellent Breastfeeding Practice Hospital”. This title is not only a joy but also a recognition for the persistent efforts, dedication and love for mothers and newborns over the past time.
Associate Professor, Dr. Do Dinh Tung emphasized that breastfeeding is an important foundation for the comprehensive development of infants, not only providing optimal nutrition but also strengthening the immune system, strengthening maternal bonds and reducing the risk of disease for both mother and baby. Therefore, the hospital will support the replication and dissemination of this model to all levels, especially hospitals in the surrounding area as well as commune and ward health stations.
