VnExpressVnExpress15/06/2023

Hoang Tien Dan, 32 years old, with end-stage chronic kidney failure, was successfully transplanted a kidney donated by his brother by doctors at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital.

The transplant was performed by doctors at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital on June 6, with the support of doctors at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital ( Hanoi ). Seven days later, the transplanted kidney function had fully recovered, the patient could walk, clean himself, urinate normally and eat better than before.

Currently, Mr. Dan is completely conscious, all vital signs are stable, and the transplanted kidney is functioning normally. Doctors assessed the surgery as a success and the patient is expected to be discharged on June 16.

Mr. Dan has had one kidney atrophy since he was a child, and is now in the final stage of kidney failure. For over a year, he has been on dialysis three times a week. Mr. Dat said his younger brother is thin and often faints from pain during dialysis. "One of my brother's kidneys has atrophied since he was a child, and the other one is also failing, so how can he survive? So I decided to give him a kidney," said Mr. Dat.

Due to difficult economic conditions, Mr. Dan's family planned to sell their land to raise money to go to Hanoi for a kidney transplant. "While arranging to sell the land, I heard that Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital was performing kidney transplants, so I registered immediately," Mr. Dan said. Tests showed that the brothers' indicators were similar, suitable for both kidney transplants.

This is the first kidney transplant performed in Hai Phong . Doctor Do Manh Thang, Director of Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital, said that in 2005, Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital successfully performed an autologous kidney transplant, which means removing the kidney, treating the damage, and then transplanting it back to the same patient. However, there are almost no organ sources in Hai Phong, and the physical and human conditions have not met the requirements for kidney transplant techniques, so it is only now that kidney transplants have been performed (ie taking a kidney from the donor and transplanting it to the recipient).

In preparation, since 2021, the hospital has invested tens of billions of VND in purchasing equipment and sent 50 doctors to Viet Duc Hospital to train in kidney transplant techniques. Doctor Thang said that after the success of this first kidney transplant, the hospital will immediately carry out the next transplants.

"We will try to quickly complete the procedures so that kidney transplants become a routine technique at the hospital," said Dr. Thang. The hospital also established a fund to support organ transplants, calling on benefactors to sponsor funds to help patients reduce treatment costs, giving more people the opportunity to receive kidney transplants as well as organ transplants in general.

Since the first kidney transplant in Vietnam 30 years ago, kidney transplants have become a routine technique at many major hospitals across the country, with more than 1,000 successful cases.
