The real "Gate to Hell" on Earth in the middle of the Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan suddenly appeared in 1971. Scientists call it by another name, the Darvaza crater. |
According to experts, the " gateway to hell" in Turkmenistan appeared due to human negligence. It happened when Soviet scientists were drilling for gas here. |
During a geological survey by scientists, a drilling rig accidentally hit a giant underground natural gas cavern. |
As a result, the entire ground under the drill collapsed, creating a giant hole about 70m in diameter. This hole is called Darvaza. |
Seeing this, geologists lit a fire on the crater to prevent the spread of methane gas. |
When they did that, experts said the fire would go out after a few weeks. They could not have imagined that the fire would smolder and never go out since 1971. Scientists are currently unable to calculate when the "gateway to hell " in Turkmenistan will stop burning. |
Because the Darvaza crater burns continuously with great heat, many people standing nearby feel like they are standing near an active volcano. |
Therefore, scientists entering the Darvaza pit to conduct research often have to equip themselves with: a climbing rope specially designed for the trip to the "gateway to hell", a self-contained breathing apparatus (similar to scuba gear), fire-resistant ropes and heat-resistant suits. |
Even with careful preparation, many people still feel scared and anxious when about to set foot in the "gates of hell". However, when making the expedition, experts carefully collect specimens for research purposes. |
After returning from the "gates of hell", many people shared the feeling that they seemed to have stepped into another world . |
