Start the New Year with Discipline and Balance

According to Nguyen Ngoc Minh Anh (grade 12, specialized in mathematics at the Gifted High School, Ho Chi Minh City National University), discipline is very important. As a face who won two first prizes for excellent students at the city level in secondary school, with SAT scores of 1520/1600, IELTS 8.0/9.0... Minh Anh has a busy schedule for specialized subjects but still arranges time to participate in many other community activities. Minh Anh was selected to participate in the Southern Mathematics Summer School 2021, representing the school and the South to participate in the international math modeling competition and participating in a number of school-level scientific research projects... At the same time, he was one of the students who founded the library collaborators club in grade 10. He is also a face that appears "on every kilometer" in school activities such as Vietnamese Teachers' Day, Mid-Autumn Festival... He also took the opportunity to join hands to organize exchanges with writers, organize volunteer activities at the temple...

"The specialized learning environment has given me the motivation to arrange my time reasonably, to think not only for studying but also for personal life, community activities... I will change my activity schedule flexibly. For example, in grade 10, I took advantage of my lunch break to do homework, arranged 4 to 5 evenings a week to study specialized subjects and the remaining days will be for other subjects, project activities", Minh Anh shared. In grades 11 and 12, you focus on university entrance exams and research activities. With English, you apply the Linearthinking method to be able to learn and conquer foreign languages effectively. As for student Bui Manh Hung, the face who achieved a near-perfect TOEFL iBT score (119/120) and received a full scholarship from top universities in the US such as Stanford, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, Rice, UCLA... said that when it is time to study or research, he will focus to the maximum.
"I turn off my phone, exit irrelevant and distracting applications on my laptop, only leave documents on the table that serve the task at hand... and apply the Pomodoro working principle (work for 25 minutes, relax for 5 minutes)," Manh Hung said. According to Manh Hung, it was quite difficult to apply the above rule at first because he considered technology as "breath" in many activities of life. But he said that when we sit down and list the advantages of practicing self-discipline, we will definitely achieve what we want, and restart easily even during times when we are easily "sluggish" like after Tet.

What to do when things feel "overwhelming"?

Sharing the "secret" to overcoming the feeling of sometimes being tired or "overloaded" because of doing many things at the same time, Minh Anh said that she often "rewards" herself with 20 to 30 minutes of watching a favorite show on TV or YouTube. In addition, Minh Anh also chooses to listen to instrumental music to relax her mind. "I also write down what I have done and what I need to do next. This helps me see that I have created value, and just need to make a little more effort to create more meaningful values. It also helps me limit stress in short-term goals, and arrange long-term plans more lightly and reasonably," Minh Anh confided. In addition, Minh Anh said that she also has a huge source of motivation, which is her grandfather. Her grandfather was determined to pursue his studies, majoring in pharmacy at the age of 40. "Although he has passed away, his story and his outstanding efforts still live in me, reminding me to keep trying," Minh Anh affirmed.

What if we have tried our best but the results are still not as expected? "The fear of failure is not the failure itself but how we perceive it. If we always keep a learning mindset, constantly improve ourselves in terms of thinking, attitude towards life... then it will not be a failure but just a valuable experience to help us become better. In addition, I also often read books and realize that my perspective and world view are much more positive thanks to this" - Vo Lap Phuc (national valedictorian of block D14 in 2019, "5 Good Students" at the national level and January Star Award of the Vietnam Student Association) affirmed.
