The two officials discussed areas of cooperation to address destabilizing actions in the East Sea, and agreed to stay in close contact on bilateral security cooperation.
In addition, the Philippines and Japan also agreed to continue and promote the trilateral cooperation framework with the United States under the administration of President Donald Trump.
Regarding the East Sea issue, on February 18, the Philippine Coast Guard accused the Chinese navy of performing dangerous flying maneuvers when flying near a Bureau of Fisheries aircraft patrolling a disputed shoal in the East Sea.
However, the Southern Theater Command of the Chinese military issued a statement alleging that a Philippine plane had "violated" its airspace, forcing Beijing to deploy naval and air forces to track, monitor and chase it away.
