Hang Dau Water Tower will be renovated into an art installation space.
Hang Dau water tower (commonly known as Hang Dau booth) is located at the intersection of the following streets: Hang Than, Hang Luoc, Hang Giay, Hang Dau, Quan Thanh and Phan Dinh Phung.
Hang Dau Water Tower was built in 1894, is one of the ancient architectural works of Hanoi built by the French. The tower was built to serve the purpose of providing clean water for soldiers and their citizens during the French colonial period in Hanoi , parallel to the construction of Yen Phu Water Plant.
The Hang Dau Water Tower is a cylindrical structure, 19m in diameter, 3 floors high, with a conical roof and a lightning rod in the middle. The tower has a giant steel water tank with a capacity of 1,250m3, located on top of 8 stone walls. The system of pipes leading up and down with iron valves is still intact, covered with dust. Today, the tower is basically still in its original state, except for the 17 windows on the first floor that have been sealed.
After many years of almost no use, the water tower will be renovated by architects and experts, organizing the exhibition Water Installation Space and Heritage of Hang Dau Water Tower. The project was carried out by a design team including architect Cao The Anh, artist Nguyen Duc Phuong and colleagues. Inspired by the concept of water and green according to Eastern philosophy, the exhibition brings a new and creative artistic space experience with sound and light.
The sound installation recreates the sounds of water in nature, bringing the public to subconscious dimensions, awakening the relationship between urban people and the natural environment. The light installation visually expands the beautiful shells, the materials are all recycled from urban waste, emphasizing the impact of urban areas on the natural environment.
Through this, the authors want to convey to the public the role of water in life as well as the connection between humans and nature. From there, each person needs to be aware of preserving the natural environment. This exhibition also aims to give the public the opportunity to admire the beauty from within an architectural work that has been "forgotten" for decades.
The art space at Hang Dau water tower will be introduced to the public for the first time within the framework of the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2023, taking place from November 17 to December 31.
