When I started singing in the early 60s, long before you were born, I went into the profession simply because of my burning passion for singing. I never sought wealth or fame. And now, all these years later, I stand here with this wonderful award in my hands."

During his speech, he also paid tribute to artists who have inspired him, including Sam Cooke, David Ruffin and Muddy Waters, and performed his 1988 hit Forever Young , marking his first performance at the AMAs since 2004.
