At An My Agricultural Service Cooperative, the area for producing yellow sticky rice is about 20 hectares, accounting for 10% of the cultivated area, arranged for production in areas of 1-3 hectares. Although the area of each household is not large, averaging 1-3 sao, the production area is compactly planned on the area of seeded land, a part of low-lying rice land. Yellow sticky rice at the Cooperative is harvested simultaneously, usually 1 month later than other mass rice varieties.
Mr. Hoang Thanh Son, Director of An My Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: The specialty rice of yellow sticky rice is favored and chosen for production by local people due to its advantages in terms of productivity, quality and value (25% higher than other commercial rice). Every crop, the cooperative arranges concentrated areas for growing yellow sticky rice so that people can produce it conveniently, ensuring convenience in the care and pest control process. From the effectiveness of the specialty rice of yellow sticky rice, An My Agricultural Service Cooperative is calculating to apply the direction of safe production for this rice variety to better access the market, helping to expand the production area and increase the value of cultivation.
Like An My Agricultural Service Cooperative, the specialty rice of yellow sticky rice is produced in other agricultural service cooperatives in the commune such as: Don Xa, An Thai, An My, La Son and Cao Cat. In the fields of An Thai village, An Thai Agricultural Service Cooperative has about 10 hectares planted with the entire yellow sticky rice variety. Many households borrow additional fields to produce this specialty rice.
Ms. Pham Thi Hoa, a villager with 7 sao of rice fields, has been growing yellow sticky rice for many years in the crop season. Ms. Hoa shared: Growing the specialty yellow sticky rice has been a habit of local people for many years. After each harvest, I always choose the good rice (even ears, high percentage of full grains) to keep as seeds for the next crop. On the production area, each crop my family harvests more than 1 ton of yellow sticky rice to sell on the market.
To increase the value of the specialty rice product, the agricultural service cooperatives in Binh My commune focus on building a brand to help better access the market. In particular, the Don Xa Agricultural Service Cooperative has a production area of nearly 10 hectares of yellow sticky rice, has built a production area certified by VietGAP; the cooperative's yellow sticky rice products have full packaging and labels clearly stating their origin.
According to Mr. Nguyen The Truong, Director of Don Xa Agricultural Service Cooperative, the establishment of a production area for yellow sticky rice according to VietGAP standards has raised the level of this specialty product. The cooperative's yellow sticky rice has participated in a number of trade promotion programs and product introductions that have been highly appreciated.
Golden flower sticky rice is a native variety, belonging to the photosensitive group, with a longer growing period than current short-term rice varieties. The rice of Golden flower sticky rice has better quality than new sticky rice varieties (the rice is sticky, fragrant, rich...). The rice yield is quite stable each crop, reaching 1.8-2 quintals/sao, about 15% higher than other sticky rice varieties.
The price of yellow sticky rice is more than 20 thousand VND/kg, twice as high as that of mass-produced sticky rice. The production cost of yellow sticky rice is similar to that of other types of rice, and people are proactive in sourcing seeds (selecting seeds for each crop). The profit from producing yellow sticky rice is more than 1 million VND/sao. The supply of yellow sticky rice is currently not enough to meet demand.
Mr. Nguyen Thai Nam, Vice Chairman of Binh My Commune People's Committee, said: Rice production still plays an important role in the local people's economy . The commune is continuing to direct the agricultural service cooperatives to maintain and develop the area of yellow sticky rice production; at the same time, aiming to produce according to safety standards, VietGAP, and promote trade promotion for this local specialty crop.
However, the production process of yellow sticky rice still has certain limitations. The current source of rice seeds does not have a specialized unit for production and supply, people have to choose by themselves through each crop. Therefore, leading to uneven quality and purity of the seeds. The planting season is late, longer than that of mass rice, although local agricultural cooperatives have planned production areas, but it is still fragmented, small-scale, difficult for irrigation, drainage, pest control...
In order for the specialty rice Nep Cai Hoa Vang to truly be effective, it is necessary to have a quality seed production program and a master plan for the entire commune's production area; promote trade and product consumption, helping people feel secure in expanding production. Developing the specialty rice Nep Cai Hoa Vang into a commodity contributes to increasing the value of the cultivated area and income for local people.
