After many years of pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor, Kieu Trang suddenly changed her plans in 12th grade, took the exam to the People's Police Academy and became valedictorian.

Ho Thi Kieu Trang, 22 years old, a student majoring in Crime Prevention and Social Order Investigation, graduated as valedictorian from the People's Police Academy with an academic score of 3.85/4, with excellent grades. Thanks to this achievement, Trang was specially promoted to the rank of lieutenant upon completing the program.

At the graduation ceremony held at the end of December, the girl from Hue represented more than 600 students to speak. For Trang, this was a great honor and also a beautiful memory to close her student life.

Trang’s dream was not to become a police officer, but a doctor. The girl born in 2001 said that when she was little, she knew that doctors could save people, so she also hoped that one day she could do this job. Therefore, Trang studied the B00 combination (Math, Chemistry, Biology) and pursued this plan throughout high school.

But Trang also grew up with pride from her grandfather’s stories about his glorious fighting days when he was young. Before he passed away, he said he wanted his granddaughter to work in the armed forces, to stand in the ranks of the Party. This was also Trang’s mother’s wish when she was young.

After a long time of thinking, in the middle of grade 12, the female student at Nguyen Chi Thanh High School decided to change from group B00 to C03 (Math, Literature, History). Teachers were worried and advised Trang to reconsider because the high school graduation exam was only a few months away.

"At that time, I was determined to start over, so I didn't change my decision," Trang said, recalling the moment she "cried with joy" when she received the news that she was admitted to the People's Police Academy.

D45 is the first course to be taught under the Ministry of Public Security 's innovative program. Students must undergo four months of mandatory training at the Training and Professional Development Center, Mobile Police Command (K02). The training program includes many contents, including learning regulations and rigorous physical training.

Trang was initially very worried, afraid that she would not be healthy enough to meet the training requirements. The girl from Hue was most "scared" of having to learn to swim in the middle of winter. Trang explained that in Hue it was not as cold as in the North, but the first time experiencing winter in Hanoi , Trang had to go into the water in 10 degree Celsius weather.

"I didn't know how to swim yet so I was very scared. Luckily, the teachers always cared for us very attentively. After swimming, we had towels, a heating system, and hot porridge, and we all completed the course," Trang recalled. According to the female student, thanks to the training course, she and her friends were able to become "the first batch of steel", strong and brave as they are now.

With knowledge in class, in addition to taking full notes in each lesson, Trang often systematizes daily knowledge by outlining the most important and general points of that day's lesson. The female student's self-study time is usually 7-9 pm every day, and it can be longer near exams. Trang also makes her own outline for each subject, combining both textbooks and reference materials, and expanding on the library.

Trang said she really likes the specialized subjects, which she started taking in her third year. The content of these subjects is directly related to the duties and work that police do, so Trang always finds them interesting.

The opportunity for Trang to gain the most experience and apply her professional knowledge was her internship at the Long Bien District Police Department, Hanoi. The female student directly participated in the project to rescue a 7-year-old boy who was kidnapped and demanded a ransom of 15 billion VND, which occurred in Viet Hung ward in mid-August 2023.

Trang still remembers that around 9pm that day, she had just returned home when she received information about the kidnapping. Immediately going to Viet Hung ward in the pouring rain, Trang heard about the case, and was divided into teams to check the routes that the subject might have passed through.

At the same time, the victim's family was taken to the ward to coordinate with the authorities. The subject kept calling to demand money, Trang was assigned to calm the victim's family.

At 5am the next morning, the kidnapper was arrested and the boy was rescued. Trang and the Long Bien District police officers returned to the office at 6am. Trang experienced feelings of excitement, anxiety, and then joy when the boy returned safely.

"What happened was something no one wanted, but having the opportunity to participate in a major project and learn from everyone was my luck. Seeing my brothers and teammates not eating or resting, I felt proud and also wanted to contribute more," Trang said.

The female student and some officers received certificates of merit from the Long Bien District Police for their outstanding achievements in the project. The experience also helped Trang better understand the knowledge learned in class. Previously, terms such as reconnaissance operations, basic operations, and project combat operations... were only lessons in books, but now Trang knows how it really happens.

In addition to studying, Trang often joins her teachers in crime prevention skills dissemination sessions for the public and students. For Trang, these activities both hone soft skills and reinforce professional knowledge. The female student has also won a series of awards and certificates of merit for scientific research, writing competitions, and learning about industry traditions organized by units under the Ministry of Public Security.

Captain Le Trung Dung, Head of Course D45, People's Police Academy, said that it has been a long time since the school had an excellent student like Trang.

In terms of knowledge, Trang is diligent, focused and intelligent, always approaching problems in a profound, non-mechanical way. As a deputy class monitor, Trang is quick, enthusiastic and skillful, recognized by many teachers. The female student is also enthusiastic in movement activities.

Captain Dung was most impressed with Trang's thesis, which achieved a perfect score. The female student did not use any documents when presenting, and understood the problem thoroughly, showing that this was truly a product of her own brainpower.

"In nearly ten years of working as a head teacher, this is the first time I have attended such a good thesis defense. Trang is a truly excellent student," said Mr. Dung.

According to the job assignment decision, Trang will return to Hue to work after graduation. In the long term, Trang wants to be able to work in professional research or teaching positions.

Looking back on her four years of university, Trang sees that if she tries her best and sets clear goals, the results will be worth it. Sometimes, Trang also thinks about her childhood dream of becoming a doctor, about her decision to change her career path to become a police officer, but not to regret it.

"I thought about it, doctors save people, police also help people, so that everyone can have a safe and happy life. So in essence, I can still live and do the job that I have had since childhood," Trang said.
